My spec's came in as 221/221 559/559 and with the Absolute stage 2 heads and 373 gears it's a blast on the street.
Thanks for the info. I notice they don't list the B1 on their site anymore?

How is the valve train noise with the TR 220 or 224, did it sound like a sewing machine, or was it slightly noisy or was it hardly noticeable?

Also, same question for anyone with comp cams high lift (560's)?

Thanks!

Any feedback on valve train noise from the various options?

I also vote B1.

I have seen people run B1/T1 cams with early 918s (non-blue stripes) for well over 30K miles with the same springs and still no breakage or signs of valve float. I have a B1 and love it. Great on the street, nice little lope, no real need to rev past 6300 with stock heads, nice SOTP gain over stock. I am also using 918s (non-blue stripe from late '01 before the 'bad batch' issue) and have almost zero increase in valvetrain noise over stock.

I have no plans of changing my 918 springs any sooner than 40-50K miles with this cam, and I might not even bother to change them at all. A friend even got about 30K out of some old 941s with a T1 before the springs started to break, and that was with heavier Stage II valves as well. I would expect 918s to last much longer than the 941s.

I think a B1 might be for you. There is even one for sale in the classified section right now with very low miles on it if you can't find one new any more. Or I'm sure you could have MTI get you a new one.

I had nearly the same list you did, when I was making my choice back in late '01. All the guys here pointed me towards a 218/218 Speed Inc cam or the MTI B1. If I had it to do over, I'd get the B1 again no question.

I really don't think springs will be an issue with this cam. It's not a 'R' grind (regular XE grind), and there is nothing super aggresive about anything in the profile. Very good driveability in an A4 as well, so I'm sure it'd be great in an M6. I just had to drill the TB hole some, and later when I bought Edit I made some small tweeks to improve driveability even further....

Here's my cam "wish list" for you to ponder and offer a recommendation
when you get a chance:

1. Good flat torque curve
2. Good low end power
3. Good power increase overall
4. Very slight to barely noticeable lope
5. Good idle and starting qualities
6. Emissions freindly
7. Good driveability, no surge.
8. Low valve train noise
9. Good solid setup, low/no maintenance issues.

So that's not asking too much is it?

Thanks for your feedback.
Well I promised to return with the decision. I had the TR220 cam installed yesterday and I am very satisfied! Wanted to reach 350 rwhp and made 355 and 355 torque with a huge flat torque curve. The catco cats are holding it back and I expect once I get them swapped there will be about 10 more horses to be had.

Driveability is excellent with just the slightest lope and good pull through all the gears and ranges.

Thanks so much to all of you who took the time to help out.

Thumbs up

I'm glad you like it! The TR 220 is a great cam- did you get a 112 or 114 LSA? Get rid of your cats, add an LS6 (or LSX) intake, ported TB, and a good set of ported heads and you could make over 400 RWHP with what is considered a "baby cam" by today's standards.

That is exactly the cam I bought. A TR220 114.
