Default Cam Newbie...

So.... I have had a lifter tick since I owned the car which has been three years.. With this years tax return it is getting fixed. So pretty much while I am paying someone to do the install (seeing I dont have the time or a garage) I am going to have him throw in a cam and valve springs as well (hopefully nothing else needs replacing). The car has 125k miles but still runs pretty strong and hopefully this will pep it up until I build a motor a few years down the road. As the title says I have NO idea about what cam to choose. I read the cam guide and everything but I really am still not sure how to choose. It is my DD so I want a mild cam that would give decent power and still street-able w/o HUGE loss in gas milage (I know I will lose some). I guess a goal HP after this install would be 380hp at the wheels. Is this asking for too much?? Like I said I personally dont know, but I am sure some of you guys will inform me otherwise.

Here is what will be done by the time the cam goes in.
K&N FIPK
LS6 Intake
3" TD under the axel to a CME
(Pacesetters LT's, Pacesetter Monza HF cats, Spintech X, Spintech Sportsman Street Mufflers)
Afterwords would come the tune...

I need help with pretty much picking what internals to choose.. Springs, lifters and the cam. Any suggestions with a little insight as to why that specific setup would be appreciated. And if I am missing something please let me know. Thanks.

Many go with or at least not above the 228R (from Texas Speed, 228/228 .588" .588") for a daily driver. From what I've seen it makes excellent power and is for the most part easy to tune - very important. Also a higher LSA like 114 will be friendlier I believe. Comp 918's would probably do you fine in the valvespring department. Just do more research, talk to who will be tuning your car, and decide. I DD (at least spring to fall) the cam in my sig UNTUNED (which you shouldn't do, I'm just poor) and it doesn't do too bad. When I get it tuned I expect it to be completely streetable. Also, I forget which you have now that I'm typing, but transmission plays a role in size selection, i.e. stall converter for an auto, beefier clutch for a manual. Hope this helps

That does help out thanks for the info. I hadnt even thought about upgrading my clutch... And I am poor also but I will try and get everything done at once but we will see... I guess it all comes down to how big my tax return is.

your goal is very easy. 380rwhp is VERY achievable with even mild cams. you could almost get that with an LS6 cam.

either the 224 or 228 cams would get your goal and maybe exceed it.

and considering i get 25mpg highway with my 233/233 cam...you should be fine in the mileage dept.

Well I just kind of threw 380rwhp out there because I wasnt really sure what was achievable. I would PREFER 400rwhp

dude not to be rude but you should start searching and looking at cams first hand before you pull the trigger. try to get a ride in one then make a cam decision. If i were you and wanted to pick a cam ive been wantint to try a speed inc. si5 cam its a mild 230s cam

and forgot to tell you....for the clutch at one time i had a stock clutch ls6 with 45k on it that held my power level....for a little bit...but it depends on how you drive it. i wouldnt go from a dig with any cam bigger then a 222-228 on a stock clutch. if you have a little extra cash go to auto zone and pick up a new flywheel 65 bucks with core and a centerforce clutch....under 500 together..

Torquer V.2 from TSP w/bolt-ons should net you roughly 395-405. Its a

232/234 dur
.595/.598 lift

It would be best to run double springs with the V2 ,but if you wanted to cheap out you could just use 918's (Wouldn't recommend) Just an idea since you said you would prefer 400rwhp. I have the Torquer v2 and love it. My SS is not a daily driver at all ,but it could easily be daily driven if i had to. For the 380ish mark i would get a 224.

I am leaning towards the Torquer V2... If I go with that do you think I need to do hardened rods as well? And any recommendations on lifters?

*FACEPALM*
I don't know if I can find that kind of money for everything and I am pretty sure that the lifter tick I had just went apeshit so time is now an issue.

I have decided. I am going with the TSP Torquer V2 cam package with rods and springs, and I will have TSP pair it up with some nice lifters. Just to be a little different I am going with a 113 LSA instead of a 112 or 114 cuz thats what everyone else has . The tune will come after, and as for clutch, oil pump etc... It will have to wait.
