Default ported stock oil pump?

I was wondering if anyone is using a stock ported oil pump with a shim in the spring to give more pressure? In "HOW TO BUILD LS1/LS6" by Will Handzel, they do a build in there using this setup. Sure beats spending $140 on a new one. What do you boys think?

Im wondering the exact same thing. I have the tools to port the stocker but I cant find shims for the spring. Most likely, Im going to port it myself and make my own shims at work.

Ive called around and cant find any tougher springs or shims so I will make my own from scrap aluminum at work. In fact, SLP never made shims like the book says. I think a .050" hockey puck will work fine.

The porting went good. Sanding after grinding took forever though.

^dunno. Maybe cut and grind a fender washer to fit in the plug.

I ended up using .063" aluminum to make a shim. Looking at the pic in the book, their shim looks twice as thick. Oh well, if its only a 5 psi gain its still a gain.

If you do port this yourself, definately leave the pump disassembled. There is no way to get the pickup tube oring in place without reaching your finger in the pump body to keep it centered. After the bolt is snugged up, the oring is trapped around the tube and isnt going anywhere. I primed the pump by motoring over the starter but I wont be ready to start the engine for while to find out what oil pres I have.

do you know what oil pressure you started with?

was there a problem with your oil pressure?

if not then why do you feel you need more?

sorry, I'm just trying to understand why everyone wants more oil pressure

^ Im doing a cam swap right now. Its not a wild cam or valve train so I dont need a huge oil pump. The reason for increased volume and pressure over stock is righer rev limiter and valve oil supply and cooling.

Im not exactly sure off the top of my head what pressure I had. I want to say about 70 on cold start up and 50 all other times. And no, I had no problems to begin with....other than the tired of the stock cam lol

Seems like alot of work to get a little more pressure.

I am just going to spend the $110 on a melling high volume when i start my swap.

Nah, couple hours max. Ive been on a pay cut for about a year, I dont have extra money to throw into the car. The car is stored this winter at my friends shop so I have months to work on it. I have yet to pay retail for anything on the cam swap. Used cam, dyno time springs, used chain, self ported OP, friend has leftover gaskets (free), only thing Im waiting on is push rods.

Default my oil pressure

I'm doing a complete overhaul with heads, cam, intake, headers and pistons. Gonna make lost more power than stock. That's why I want more oil pressure. I feel it won't hurt anything having more oil pressure. I want to do it myself cause I like to hotrod!
