Default Which replacement lifters for my application?

As of right now, I have a stock 98 WS6 with origional lifters. They are getting noisy upon startup, and I want to replace them soon, or atleast when I do my cam swap. I am wanting to know which would be a good replacement for a stock engine, and a MS3 stock head setup? I do not intend to spin the motor too much... these engines are too expensive just to push them to the limit and replace them every year.

Also, another question I have is about the linked lifters. I am new to the LS based engines, and do not know the benifit of them.

Thanks in the advance for the advice, this is an awesome community to be a part of!

I had the same question. I just purchased heads and a cam and was advised to get the Comp 850-16 lifters.

I had good luck with replacing the stockers with the CompR lifters. Some people had issues with preload...etc using those, but Katech makes a good replacement, I think Morel and or the LS7 lifter from GM.

i used the LS7 lifters and havent had any problems.

by linked lifters, if you are reffering to the lifters that have the bar between 2 of them, thoes are retro fit roller lifters for non roller blocks. they dont apply to LS applications since they are roller from the factory.

actually the absolute best lifters out there for ls stuff are the Morel link bars. with the link bars you dont have to worry about spinning a lifter in the bore or the plastic lifter trays

they are the best but they are priced as such. i believe they run just over $500 a set. i'm trying to decide if i'm feeling lucky or if i should just pony up for the best on my new motor

Well, I have compR's in the GTP, and they were good to me. I was at first wanting to use LS7 lifters for my engine, but have herd of several failure's in the past few weeks. I will be DD this car during the nice months, and only want to tear it apart every 20k miles or so for inspection.

Thanks for the info thus far!

Every 20k?? Are you beating it daily all day? Seems kinda nuts to me.

Well, in a since yes. I do drive my vehicle's hard. I do not "beat" on them, but run them hard. I keep maintence up, and change my oil with quality products, and have never had a failure yet. I just know that aftermarket parts, are not designed to last a long time like factory parts. I know that higher load valve springs wear out faster and break. Spring breaks, valve drops... and boom. Time for a new motor. My last car I drove for 30k miles, with heads, cam and supporting mods, running 12's FWD on pump gas.

It takes so little time to tear an engine appart to inspect, and replace worn out parts. And that to me, is piece of mind. I don't like breaking things

Plus, i'm an ASE mechanic, and have a shop at my disposal, and don't mind the extra time.

I went with a set of Comp 850 lifters and new LS2 trays myself.

You could go with the LS7 lifters, although Ive been seeing a few failure threads about them lately.

Dont get the Comp "R" lifters unless you have adjustable roller rockers.

They are designed to only take .004"-.006" of preload. Thats JUST barely past zero lash, probably 1/16" of a turn.

850s are the standard style.

Gaterman Products has LS1/LS6 stock lifters. I have used original LS1/LS6 lifters on H/C packages and have not had any failures to date. My car is running on the same lifters and they only run $100.

DO NOT use comp R lifters unless you are going to use adjustable rockers, it even says so when you buy them on the Comp web site. On one of my deployments my wife thought to do something nice and the idiot who did the build used the Comp Rs and I had to do remove all his **** work because he used the stock rockers and you will never get the correct preload and lash with non adjustable rockers.
