Default what is the record for...

I was wondering...what is the most hp/torque gained from tuning alone on a H/C car with the stock bottom end?? stupid question i know..but my car slowed down with heads and cam swap..so just wondering how much is "possible" to pick up?the car feels actually slower to me and smells richer than crap, also i lost alot of e.t. and mph at the track..just hoping it's running like 9:1 A/F ratio lol..later,

carter

IMO, 20 HP is a good pick up from tuning. Some see more.

Have you made sure that your O2 sensors are good? A bad sensor will give false readings and can make the car run rich.

hey thank's man,
well I havent checked my 02's and that could be a problem...but even if I picked up 20rwhp from tuning..I would still be 1 tenth slower than before the heads and cam swap (using method of every 10 rwhp is a tenth). Now one thing that kinda scared me when I put my cam in..i measured the lobes with a dial caliper...from the bottom of the lobe to the top...and my stock cam had a taller lobe..is this right? I didnt degree the cam when I put it in because I didnt have a degree wheel and i just wanted the car back together...could it be the wrong cam??

Stock lift on a 2000 is supposed to be .496/.496; the Hot Cam is .525/.525. You won't actually measure that much on either one because of the rocker ratio. Could your car have already had an aftermarket cam in it?

Oh, I bet I know why they miked different; the Hot cam probably has a smaller base circle than the stock cam did; I think you will be OK with some tuning. The added valve overlap with your new cam is probably what is making it smell rich. Like you said, it may need to be degreed also.

sorry I forgot to mention..this cam isn't a hot cam anymore...it's a custom grind 224/230 .568"/.573" 114 +2 this cam is the one that measured smaller than the stock cam

Hmmm, I don't know unless something is wrong somewhere; when you installed maybe it didn't get degreed properly or maybe the timing is not be advanced enough by the PCM (knock retard.) What rear end ratio are you running? Big cams like low gears like 4.11-4.56.

I have 3.42 gears in it now with a 3200 stall..the car goes 1.4 and 1.5 sixty foot's..but thats it..no top end i went from 117 to 113..maybe there is some stuff going on with the computer..who know's..a better gear might help too..i'm thinking about 4.10's..but I like gas mileage too

Still probably is a difference in base circle. They have to use a smaller base circle to get high lift, otherwise the lobes would stick out farther than the bearings so it would not fit in the engine. To truely compare lift you need to subtract the base circle measurment from the overall measurement, then multiply by the rocker ratio (1.7 for the LS1.)

sweet thank's man..the lobe lift on the new cam multiplied by the rocker comes out to .568"/.573"..so it is correct i guess...but then why would I loose over 3 tenths and 4 mph going from stock heads to s2 5.3 liter's and from the hot cam to this cam?..sure tuning will help somewhat..but even if it gave me 30 rwhp from tuning..i would just be back where i started with the hot cam and stock heads something isn't right..guess I need to just shut up and get on the dyno to tell the true story thank's for the input though guys
