Are you talking stock rebuild? Machine work? Are you looking for cheap performance? Forged pistons? New crank? What are you wanting to rebuild for? Just time to do it or cheap upgrade?

Give us a background on the car and what you plan to do with it. I can just start naming all kinds of stuff off to you, but it won't do you any good.

well im thinkin stock rebuild because i dont think i have the cash for the setup i wanted to go with back when i was driving the car everyday. its been sitting up for at least 2 yrs now and i wanna get it back on da road. im only rebuilding because it has high miles on da ticker now it still starts and runs but the tranny slips outa first gear. so i was thinking stock rebuild and bolt-ons would put me in da 12's since i was running mid 13's without ever doing anything to it at all. tho i would love to have a 228 cam and a set of 5.3 ltr heads i doubt if i can afford.

I am in the beginning stages of my rebuild. My motor has about 94K on it and it is time for the rebuild.
I have bought:

220/220 .581/.581 cam
comp cam lifters
comp cam rods (stock length)
PAC springs .600
SLP double chain
SLP oil pump
fuel raills
31 injectors
full off-road exhaust
delete panel for a/c
motor & tranny ploy mounts
ARP bolts everywhere
full gasket kit
TOTAL - about $1700 plus shipping

Let me know if you need any prices and places where I bougth the items
I am staying stock heads untill I can afford a full rebuild of the bottom end. I got to many miles.

Unless you have access to an accurate torque wrench, a set of mics, and knowledge of engine building I'd recommend the following:

1.) Get $500 from the ATM, and burn it.
2.) Drain the oil from your current engine, then run it until it blows.

This way, you get the same result but without all the time and effort.

If the engine starts and runs fine then I wouldnt do anything to it. There are alot of ls1's running around with well over 100k on them and running fine. Get the transmission fixed and look at your boltons that you want.

If you are going to rebuild the bottom and on a budget keep the stock crank. Its good for along time. Since its all apart I would do a set of forged pistons, rings and if you have the extra money a set of forged rods. The rods arent bad but if you can afford them do it while its apart.

By doing pistons you can raise the compression some and gain a little power but dont expect alot. Rebuilding is more about making it stronger than about gaining power.

like silver said, get the tranny fixed, rebuilding the engine is not gonna help you trans from slipping. and if you have no experience or the proper tools for a rebuild, you should have a professional do it or buy a new short block, or maybe a used short block with low miles.

Are you rebuilding it just because of the miles or does it need it? 94K is not alot of miles for these motors.

I am finishing my 383 and let me assure you it is not cheap to rebuild one of these motors in any form. I have all the tools and knowledge to do it myself, Only the machine work has to be done out.(and it aint cheap)
Your best bet for saving is to find a known good shortblock from someone who has crashed theirs, or went bigger. That will be your cheapest route I assure you. If you have never built an engine, and think that its just throwing parts in,That is a very expensive mistake.
