There's an old rule of thumb with motors, LS1's especially. The motor will eventually run how you drive it. If you putt around town for the first few thousand miles it's going to be a slower motor. Beat the **** out of it, loosen it up, and it's gonna run like a raped ape. Loose = good (well when it comes to motors anyway )

FWIW, I have a brand new 02 LS6 shortblock in my car. When I finished my setup, I was sideways comin out the neighborhood and nailed 6900 rpm's on the first 1-2 shift this motor ever saw

Yeah, keep your oil change pretty regular during the first 1500 miles or so. I changed mine @ 50 miles just to get all the "new motor shaving" out. Then changed again @ 500 miles. I'll be changing again @ 1000, 1500, then on from then will be every 3K. Keeping fresh oil in the motor helps everything seat properly during the break in period. Other than that, drive it like you stole the bitch..

If it's a new unseasoned block you may want to get at least 6-10 full heat cycles on it first.

Heat cycles are a given IMO. Let the motor reach operating temp and fully cool at least twice. I did this in my driveway

Install built motor.
Disconnect injectors and ignition
Crank until oil pressure reads positive
Reconnect injectors and ignition
Fire up motor
Rev motor up between 2500-3000 for 20 minutes (This will seat rings)
Change oil and filter
Drive for 500 miles varying driving styles, city driving light load, highway pulls!!
Change oil and filter

If it isnt smoking she's good to go!!

As you can see 20 people will have 20 different ways to do a break-in. Pick the one you are most comfortable with and roll on. Good Luck.

For what it's worth here's my method.

It takes cylinder pressure to seat the rings good. Just be carefull. All the seating will be done by 500 miles easy. Every once in a while do a full throttle runs to about 4000 rmp then let off the gas and let the engine slow the car down to suck oil up into the cylinders. Never drive at the same speed for too long of a time, keep varing the rpm of the engine and get on it alot (but keep the rpms within reason for the first 200 miles), let it cool and go and keep doing it until about 500 miles .

Dale is correct,Go out and run it up to 4000 and let off the gas few times (30 or 40 miles.)This will pull oil into the cyl. and break the rings in quickly. Then let her cool a few hrs and repeat it again making sure u change the oil regularly in the first 500 miles.

I'd let her rip after 100 miles while breaking it in this way.
