Default How do I diagnose a bad main cap bearing?

I have a 99 LS1 with 178XXX(3rd owner. 2nd owner says the first owner rebuilt it) miles with an auto. I first thought it was a bad pulley because it sounds exactly like it but I checked all the pulleys and they are fine. The sound is coming from the rear of the motor. I have a bad rear main seal I have oil between the motor and tranny and also the oil pan idk if that's it?? I changed the oil and no sign of any metal shavings. The motor doesn't hesitate at idle or any RPM. The squeeling does go with the RPM. If it is a bad bearing do I need to get a new crank and main caps? Thanks in advanced.

did you cut up the oil filter? if there is a bad bearing the crank will have to be checked by a machine shop. but you shouldnt need new caps (unless its really bad) just new bearings. the only way to really know is to pull the oil pan and take a look for yourself. rear seals are really easy to screw up so the first owner might have installed it wrong and i took this long to become noticable. hows your oil pressure?

squeeling shouldn't be associated with a bad bearing. more of a knock type sound since the clearance has increased.

That's what I thought. My lt1 in my impala spun a bearing and you could hear the crank rattling inside. Which leads me to beleive it might be the rear main seal.

Oil pressure is fine. I'll change the oil filter this weekend to see if there are any shavings when I cut it open.

if you have a magnet you can just stick that in and should come up with shavings or no. but doesn't sound like it's a bearing so far.
