That's a tough dad that won't share his combo with his son LOL. Just build a 402 and done right will make a very streetable 500 rwhp plus. That is my plan. no more $$$ than than FI on a 346 and more dependabe IMO. I have seen some 540rwhp streetable 402's but 500 is EASY.....Again get GOOD heads....

01's did not come with a ls6 intake mani, they came with a ls1 engine....
And if your 500hp dyno number is your main concern, start thinking 1 7/8 headers, pricey heads (afr, tfs), big *** cam, ported fast and a 90mm.
Or you can think of a more budget based build (ls6 intake, gm heads). Still getting a nice low 4xx dyno number but better drivability, powerband, etc.
And your dads probably not telling you about the 150shot that gave him his 500whp status.

Yeah, I have run 1000's of cars on a dyno and never saw a near stock cube'd SBC make 500rwhp on motor no matter how great the heads were, much less through a TH350 or 400. Plenty of BBC's making 500rwtq though. I think he is pulling your chain. I'm not calling you or your dad a liar, so keep that in mind. You would be surprised at the amount of people that think they have a high number combo and then see 100-160rwhp less than what they expected.

The final number may be a bit off, I've never seen a dyno sheet. The car was full weight and running a 7.20 1/8th mile with 1.8 60 ft. There was no nitrous on that run either, he removed the nitrous when he deviated from stock and had the engine built. Something about a sign that said big boys don't suck on bottles he said lol.
As much as I would love a 402 or 427 that isn't Going to happen for me anytime soon, but I would love to have a decent set of heads that can support a new bottom end later down the road. Still trying to stay in the 2000 budget though. What out there can get me a happy 425rwhp with a solid tq curve? I think I can live with my bike being slightly faster than my car still :p

orangeappeel.. that name sounds familiar, did you build a ZXR trike and post the build on riderforums or is that someone else? As to almost dying because your bike was faster than your car, I sold my truck because of that a few years back. a lifted silverado coming off of a sport bike made for some scary sounds around the first couple turns when your sense of handling and speed are a little dulled!

Well let me echo what several have already stated, "build your setup around a great set of heads". My opinion would be to strongly look at the TFS 215s CNC heads, or the TFS 220 cc "AS CAST". Ron at Vengeance Racing is an authorized dealer and will meet or beat any advertised price.
A little history, I was an idiot chasing the magical 500 rwhp from 346 cubes a few years back. Seemed like no matter what was done, in 2006, or 2007, it just didn't hit the mark. My best dyno was 490 rwhp 445 rwtq on LG Motorsports dyno. As good as that sounds, I was still getting beat by "STOCK" c6zo6's. Doesn't make sense, generous dyno IMHO. At any rate don't make the same mistakes I did.
Select the best heads you can afford, spec a cam around the characterisitics of those heads, and make sure your intake and exhaust are breathing well. Ported FAST 92 mm Intake from Vengeance would be a good place to start, 3 inch true duals, or a custom Y Merge like Pat G used 4" and add a cutout. Don't forget about a Meziere EWP, UD pully to help free up some power by reducing parasitic loss. A good CAI as well. Cooler IATs will help make more power too.

You get to pick any cam you want with the heads and your choice of springs too. I say get the magic stick v.3 with the heads. I got that combo and it turned my car into a rocket! The cam bucks a just a little at lower RPM, but not too much. I wouldnt go any bigger if it's also a DD.

thats what I had originally planned on with a 228 cam on a 112 LSA. That would put me around 425HP from what I've seen right?
The problem there is, as SOM was talking about, I would love to build a 402 or 427 later down the road, and would rather not buy heads twice.. would a set of stg 2.5 5.3L heads from TSP be able to support that well? And one thing I've always wandered.. whats the big deal with putting 5.3L heads on a 5.7 LS1 !?

I plan to get my chambers worked for the bigger bore by TEA and drop them on top of one of Erik's LS2 402 short block's in the next year and should have a stout motor...

I may give tfs a call then. Do you think it would be possible to come out below 2.5k still with the heads, cam, rockers, lifters(might as well while its torn down that much), springs, pushrods and timing chain?

Next question, the kit vengeance sells comes with a 220cc TFS as cast head. Is that going to be ok for the long term plan of a 402CI LSX engine?

I personally run 4 inch bore TFS 215's. They work great on a 402.

won't a 4" bore cause flow issues with the stock bore though? Would it not make more sense to get them at the stock bore now and port them later to fit the 4" bore?
