Default Disaster

We took apart my friend's motor today as there was water in the oil. Figured it was a head gasket. Unfortunately, it was part of the block missing. The majority of the piston was in the oil pan. We pulled out enough sleeve/block that the hole was about the size of a dollar bill. We also found a bolt inside and think that was the cause of the problem. If you look close at the second picture, you can see the bolt wedged between the rod wrist pin and what's left of the cylinder wall. I can send out souvenirs tomorrow.

By the way, this is a stock motor. Stock heads/cam and no nitrous/boost.

this was a running engine? the only reason you tore it apart was water in the oil? no noise?

Woah...

Was he low on oil, did he overheat, overrev? .. seems like an odd thing to just happen on a stock engine.

Man that made me wince.

Yeah it was running. He called me and said it was leaking water and tapping, but nothing horrible. The car was running fine up until Friday night and I'm really not sure how a bolt got in there. Just for reference it was a 10mm. We already have a 5.3 to throw back in there for the time being.

Yeah we just cleaned it out and threw the heads back on. It's running better than ever.
