Default Morel Lifter vs Push rod length question...

The engine config is 6.0l Iron block with TFS235 heads using YT ultra's (1.7) and a cometic .051 head gasket with Lunati (morel) lifters. I purchased 7.5 3/8" .080 wall double taper push rods which by virtue of their diameter don't work. TFS did a crummy job with positioning their holes for a lager push rod. Since the Morels are slightly taller than a stock lifter, absence of having a solid lifter to do some verification, what would be "best guesstimate" for what i would need? Does anyone have a similar set up that could shed some light on this for me please? I understand that Chris Straub has a lot of knowledge but don't know how to reach him if anyone can help!

That should be close,

If you talk to Morel's R&D they will tell you 3/4 turn of lifter preload on the rockers is correct setting for hydraulic roller with that combination.

I would just buy a checker. Even if someone has the same setup its still recommended to double check. Thats what I would do.

Fraser,
So you think the 7.5 will be close enough?

You really should get a 5/16" pushrod length checker. This will tell you exactly what length you need and allow you to measure clearance to see what diameter pushrod you can fit. If yours is similar to the problem I had the contact is on the intake side at about 5 o'clock. I was able to use an 11/32" pushrod but had to shim the rocker over 0.010" to get clearance(using Comp shaft rockers).

Have you shimmed the rockers and set your wipe pattern yet? If not then you can also use the checker pushrod to get that sorted out.

I do have a 5/16" checker and will do some investigations with this tonight and you are absolutely right, the rub is at the 5:00 position. What length did you finally settle on? I have YT Ultralight 1.7's and they do have shims but am not using them with the current set up. I did check the swipe pattern and it was dead on in the center. I am assuming though that with a shorter push rod, then a shim would be mandatory. The kit came with some, not sure what the thickness is but will check.

Don't use the shim to set preload, it is used to set the wipe pattern only. You need to measure for pushrod length and then set preload. When I spoke with Morel, they recommended 0.030"-0.050". I have mine at 0.050" since I found them quieter. I verified this to be a good preload with John Callies.

If your wipe is good with the YT's, then you need to measure for the pushrod length.

Mine are 7.350" but the Comp rockers require a shorter pushrod than the YT's. I have been told that the Comp rockers also move the pushrod closer to the head, so the YT's should have better clearance than mine. Are you able to measure the clearance between the checking pushrod and the area of contact? I smashed a piece of wire until it tightly fit into the gap then measured its thickness. This was the best method I could devise as this is a tricky spot to get to.

I took a different approach and used machinist blue on the pushrod and then spun the motor over with the starter (no plugs). However, you have to be careful installing and removing so you don't inadvertently scratch the blue. I am somewhat surprised the double taper didn't fit since they are nearly 5/16 by the time they reach the opening in the top of the head.
