Default El Torro Idle

What is your El Torro idle set at? I just ordered the cam and I want my car to lope pretty hard.

I was thinking maybe setting idle at 800. Thoughts?

Get that bitch tuned Dakota!

For what it's worth, my cam is close to the el torro and it sits around 850-900ish.

I think it has an 8° valve overlap. If you want a comparison I had a 15.5° overlap on my 244/248 cam and it loped really hard.

I know it doesn't have a lot of overlap, that is why I wanted to set the idle real low so it would lope hard. I dont DD the thing so I dont really care if it has trouble idling

You will care when it dies at every stop light!

I had my 244/248 cam idle set to 1100 and it still had a pro stock idle.
228R is set to 900.

You don't set your idle for sound. You set it for where the cam has decent vacuum. 850-950 rpm is probably about right. I have played with my idle quite a bit from 1000 rpm down to 600 rpm and it reallys doesn't lope any harder the lower you go. I prefer the way it sounds around 900, a nice quick chop. It will lope pretty good anyways, here is my 224 cam idle @ 900 rpm, yours will sound similar.

The El Torro needs a 900-950 rpm idle and correct MAF/VE/RAF calibrations. The driveability of this cam is less than impressive and requires some extra elbow grease to tune properly.

Mine drives GREAT once it warm. Doesn't cut off, minimal surge etc...more power EVERYWHERE. Cold start SUCKS though....

No reason cold start should suck at all, do you have hptuners or anything? I could fix that for you.

What does it do during cold starts?

Because it's on a 230 cam on a 111LSA.

Damien, It just knocks off w/o a little throttle and hunts for idle. After about a minute all is good.......

No. 2 degrees of advances means it's bringing the intake closing point or "ICL" down to a 109. Advance does not change the LSA, it changes intake closing.

The El Torro is a 111+2 which means it's a 111LSA/109ICL.
