Default 5.3 Heads or other?

I have searched and I cant really find a concise answer to what im looking for. I have a cam, long tubes, and motor mounts to install in my 2000 SS Ls1, and I figured instead of doing all these mods with the motor in the car, i might as well drop the kmember and make my life easier. Anyway, being that Im going to be doing all this work, i figured instead of putting new springs, seats, seals on the stock heads, i figured i may as well get some budget heads. So my question is what heads would be good, I was looking at some 5.3 heads and i know they bump up the compression a little, however i dont know if any other work is required or whatever. LS6 heads might be good as well, but like i said after searching i cant really find a good thread with a whole lot of info on different casting numbers and stuff. Anyone have any input?

Oh btw my cam is a Torquer V.2

The 5.3's are good for a small bump in compression but the problem is when they're stock they have a small intake valve which is not good for making power. A set of milled 243's (LS6/2) heads are better to use if you can get a set of those instead.

sorry to steal your post... what if you were to change the valves to something like 2.02/1.60 and do a hand port and gasket match on the 5.3 heads??? would you net more then stock 243's???

Depending on how much material you removed they could flow better. For all the work you would be better of getting a done set of cnc ported ones from a sponser. The only reason I say this is because they have already spent the money to test what works and doesn't work. You might save $500 or so attempting to do the port work. Wouldn't you rather pay the extra and get the most bang for your buck.

I have ported my own heads in the past. and I will probally do some of it in the future for certin applications. But for the amount of time it takes to do one head properly by hand I would rather have it done by a cnc and be nearly perfect on every port.

I've checked into getting the machine work done. After that and new valves and springs puts you over buying from texas speed and most the after market set ups makes more sense to buy new. I was just seeing if doing it that way would help save some bucks an make the 706 castings better then stock 243's.

TEA 5.3 heads milled to 59 CC chambers for 11.4 compression..they flow 316 @ .600 lift on the intake side...car is a daily driver putting down 452/418 .. 2.02 intake vales and 1.57 exhaust valves... I have been running them for the last 82,000 miles with no complaints...
