Default Pass or fail?????

I have a 2002 camaro ss with 138,000 miles on it. i just swapped the stock cam for the asa gm cam with .525 lift. when i installed it the stock ls1 valve springs appeared to be in good condition as well as the rods and timing chain and bearings. i want to know how many miles i will be able to go without a spring floating or my engine blowing up. so feel free to post ur comments on what u think will happen..... plz post i need opinions

you can't tell if valve springs are good buy looking at them.install new springs using a onhead spring compressor from the ws6 store.

Default Yes I do agree, however!

Maybe he's referring to how much pitting is in the springs. I've seen in the past that pitting occurs due to continues stress and load/heat even with how corse the material is.

You should patent your visual spring fatigue analysis and coil bind assessment process.

Most of us idiots have to check the manufacturer's specs and use compressors, micrometers, etc. Your way sounds much nicer.

But seriously, the springs weren't rated for that lift when they were new. They're at 138K miles now, and I wouldn't even run them w/ the stock cam with that much mileage on them. Forget about a .525" cam.

With that much mileage, valve spring, pushrods, timing chain, and oil pump should all be changed if you are swapping in a hotter cam.

Question

Why wait, Just pull the engine and have it rebuilt now.
Isn't that what you want to do anyway?

yeah but the cam is so mild i think i can get at least another 20,000 more miles out of it with this slightly more aggresive cam. and that will give me time to save up for a hell of a rebuild. and i also have full exhaust and intake so at least the cam can breathe.

long story short i just wanted to see what ppl think cause everyone doubts the 02 ls1 and says cant handle much and u have to do all of this **** to it to make it strong for any aftermarket eternal mods. but like i said this cam isnt far off from the stock one and i have looked everywhere and i think i am the first one to try this on stock ls1 heads. so if anything it will be a learning experience for all ls1 owners on how amazing the stock ls1 is and how indestructible they r. and feel free bad mouthing me all i dont care i just want feedback even if it like ur an idiot or ur car is goin blow and what not.

You'll probably get 50% of what you want.

You are wasting your money. Save it until you can make the engine you truly want.

Even if it lasted fine, which is possible, if you are just going to change it in 20k miles anyway, there is no point. Do it right the first time. If you can avoid going through the motor all over again, I would take that opportunity. Unless you want a learning experience, they by all means, go ahead with it.

You know the difference between a lifter and a valve spring is right? And you know what coil bind is right?

yeah i see what u mean cause going through that motor is a nightmare and the labor on it is outrageous but i mean when it fails i could also get an engine swap and a bunch of different possibilities that r up in the air. but for now this i would just like to see what will happen and how long this will last for and like the previous quote said some guy did the same thing and it ran fine 5k after and is still running so all and all i will come to the road of motor issuses such as floating vaves bent rods and what not but not til later. and then i can worry about what i am goin do. i appreciate the feedback btw
