Default 224/224 112lsa idle, driveability, etc....

I am asking for a friend at work, how does the 224/224 112 idle, what is its level of driveability? He has Pacesetter headers, orp and stock Z28 catback, would this be at all a "sleeper", or could the cam be heard easily like at a stoplight or cruising, etc? He wants a "sleeper", would he be better off with a smaller cam, like MTI S2 (224/220 116, or TR "Old Man cam" (215/220 115), or the 224/224 114 even?

What kind of power could be expected with a set of "inexpensive" S2 heads (PP non-LS6 S2, TEA S2, or AS S2)? He has alot of boltons and a 10 bolt with 4.10s also, fwiw. Could he see 420+ with the 4.10s with a mild cam such as the above listed cams and "cheap" heads like these?

I am trying to convince him that good numbers can be had for not as many $$$ as he thinks.....

Driveability is pretty good and better with a tune. If he wants sleeper I would look at that cam on a 114lsa though. I think he could easily see 420hp with a set of heads.
My #'s are in my sig.(stock heads still).

I have a 224/224 114 w/ a 581 lift and am using it with the stock ZO6 exhaust.. it's noticeable by those who know and since I don't know the reasons for keeping it a sleeper, definitely by a GM mechanic.

I put this cam in a few weeks ago and I'm surprised how easy it is to drive. I can still cruise at 1100 rpms with no issues. Wish I went a little bigger. Sound at cruise is the same. WOT sounds a little crisper. Lopes a little at idle through my Borla with Macs/no cats. Through a stock Z catback you might not be able to tell theres a cam in there at all.

Josh....yer such a veteran
Shawn....as said above, the 224/224 on a 114-116 is the way to go for stealth. A "mild" exhaust will help hide it on the 114, and the 116 should be smooth as silk. With decent heads and bolt on's 400+ "shouldn't" be a problem. Single pattern cams make great power. FWIW....my old T1(221/221, 558/558, 112) made 416/405 w/TEA heads through the twelve bolt/slicks on an FMS tune. He can definately make the # "affordably" (a relative term )

He doesn't need it to be a "sleeper" per se, but he heard my 230/224 111 and doesn't want anyting that choppy or radical. I over stated the "sleeper" part, because hes not gonna go with a 231/237 or G5X2 or XXX, so I didn't want the "My cam is 24X/24X and idles and drives like stock" people in here.....

The 224/224 XE-R on a 112 LSA is a great street/strip cam with awesome street manners. This is the first cam we tried in my '02 SS A4, and I had mine idling at 800 RPM just so I could hear it. With an 875-900 RPM idle, it will barely be audible. It will still make some nice low-end and mid-range power, and the peak power will be good for the size of the cam. I picked up 40 RWHP with this cam in my SS and ran a best of 11.63 @ 114 MPH on a 1.58 60' with all of the bolt-ons and stock cylinder heads.

I think the 224/224 XE-R on a 112 LSA would be a great choice for your friend, and it won't be too radical at all. Tell him to give us a call if he has any questions.

If your going to put a cam in do it right or just stay stock and leave it a family car people!

Are you street/strip racing to win w/ more HP or just spending money on parts/labor to have a different stock parts.
