Default burning oil

I had blow by once before but replaced the piston rings with a "at home" bottle hone. The major issue was that 3 rings had the gaps lined up. That fixed the issue.

Several years later I now have oil burning again. I imagine at 110k body miles it is probably the valve guides, but I am not sure where to start.

Suggestions thoughts?

Also, if it is the heads what would be a good replacement head for use with a gen III hot cam?

Thanks in advance!

Ring gaps do not cause oil consumption unless the gaps are severe. The rings
spin so they are lining up at times. You just happened to find a few cylinders
that stopped that way by chance.

As for a starting point, you should replace the valve seals. Check the valve
clearance while the springs are off. Most of the time, you will find that the
seals will cure the oil consumption issue.

I haven't noticed smoke to be honest. Just alot of black on the tailpipe. This is definitely a slow burn since it has happened over about 3k miles.

Didn't realize that the rings spin. Very possible at the time the gaps were too big and that is why it resolved the burning issue. Not sure.

Thanks for the advice on the valve seals. Anyone else have info on a good head for the gen III hot cam?
