Default How High is too High? (Oil)

I was cruising down the highway to work this morning doing ~70-75mph and noticed that my oil pressure was higher than normal (~78-79) instead of the typical 70. However once I got off the highway and was driving 45mph, it dropped back down to normal.

If I'm maxing out the guage (80) am I looking at potential trouble?

Have you changed anything recently. Diff oil type, weight, or brand?? Any new or diff type of filter or hard parts changed.

The only time I had really high oil PSI was with a Melling High Volume oil pump on my LT1 and that was during really cold days running 10w-30 COnventional oil.

Still had great PSI when the bearing ate though. Kinda weird.

Holy ****, your getting 70psi pressure cruising on the highway? Something definetly isnt right. Either your oil pressure sending unit is fubar or you got other problems. Thats a ton of pressure. Mine only sees about 60psi @ WOT & sits just a tad over 40psi when cruising at 70mph in 5th gear. I barely ever use 6th gear anymore due to the hills around here, I dont have to downshift if I stay in 5th, LOL.

Thats a bit high. Mine is right under 60psi cruising at 70mph and sees ~70psi when WOT.

I'd assume he means how it should hover (flucuating obviously) around 40psi cruising on the highway.

Only thing I could think of is the OP sender, but I'll stay tuned. I'm sure someone will pop in with an answer. How is it at WOT?

"normal" PSI is 60

Running Rotella T

Haven't taken it up to WOT so not sure what it will jump to. It's been 76-78 most of the day under mild throttle with it staying at 70 at idle.

I'm thinking my guage is probably fubar but it's strange that it would start doing this randomly today.

after reading this i took my car out for a ride. Mine idle'd about 60 psi, after warm up went to about 55-57. WOT i saw 78-79 psi.
im running 10-30 mobile 1

should i just put 5-30 in it next time and see what happens?

my car is stock other than a lid, tune, catback with the cutout open.

Possibly oil pressure relief valve might be stuck. Or just the sending unit

Took it to WOT and it pegged 80psi - if it's over pressurized where would the oil go?

Man, that just seems really high to me. My car has never seen oil pressure like this, not even when I first bought it. When I start it cold it'll see about 50psi & go a little past 60psi if I get on it. But once it hits operating temp it stays around 40 under part throttle & cruising & never goes over 60psi WOT once hot.

I have always from day one driving it off the lot ran Castrol GTX 10w30. Never had any issues with it driving in all weather conditions year round. Oil plug is always clean & when I tore it down for the H/C everything looked great.

Maybe its just me but everyone seeing these higher pressures just sounds a little high to me. But like I stated my car has never seen those kinda pressures.

You're car sounds exactly how mine does; cold, warm, part throttle, etc.

I checked just to make sure and at WOT my car runs right at 60psi, and as I said before it dances around the 40psi cruising and whatnot.

has the guage always showed this much pressure? If so you might want to put a manual guage on it to check. If the manual confirms the pressure I would look at pulling the oil pump.
