Default NO dot to dot on crank/cam gear

Done a cam swap before on my original motor and the cam/crank gears had the dots, this motor a shop put together and there is a dot on the cam gear but NO DOT on the crank gear. I've checked all 360* of the crank gear w/no sign of a dot.

Since I can't do dot to dot and the motor is already degreed and set, can't I just mark the cam gear and crank gear w/a paint marker for reference and just take it off and put it back on?

thanks in advance

The engine doesn't know there are dots on the gears, so yes...if you are happy with where it was set, and just want to be able to take it off and put it back on in the same spot then mark it yourself

Crank gear might be installed backward?

Clever replies. Someday maybe I'll come up with one. Maybe not.

Have you guys looked at a crank gear lately?? The teeth are on the end of the gear, which is about 2" or so long...the other 1 3/4" don't have teeth. If it was installed backwards, the chain wouldn't come close to aligning! That is unless it is an aftermarket piece that has a hub and gear separate of each other...then I guess it could be backwards.

Could check it with a mirror to see if it is. The issue is that if it is, the crank gear has a chamfer to fit the crank that would now face incorrectly outward.

put number one piston at TDC and look close at the gear. I bet there is a mark on the gear hiding behind the sleeve of the oil pump. I had to mark mine because it was covered up by the sleeve.
