Default Rocker Arm Install Problem

Had an oil change done the other day on my 05 CTS-V and had a couple of needle bearings attached to the drain plug. I did some research and found that the stock rocker arms fail and dump their needle bearings into the drain pan. So I ordered up a set of 1.7 drop in replacement non adjustable rocker arms by Harland Sharp from Summit. Followed the instructions and removed the old ones and installed the new ones. I didn't measure preload as these are non adjustable, just torqued them down to 22 ft/lbs. I turned the motor over before hooking up the plug wires to ensure that they won't hit the valve covers and everything seemed good. When I started it up, it ran like crap. It wouldn't stay running unless I gave it a little gas. Any ideas on what I could have messed up? What should I be looking for when I tear it apart?

Define "ran like crap". Did it sound like it was missing? Did you throw a code?

Related to your install were plug wires, electrical connections and PCV (vacuum) to the valvecovers.

I guess when I say ran like crap, it wouldn't stay running and sounding like it was heavily missing and I didn't get a check engine light or anything. I re-verified that the one vacuum line (front passenger side valve cover) was connected and that all plug wires were also connected. The 2 connections (1 each) to the either side coil packs where also seated tightly. I disassembled this morning and none of the rocker arms look like they are nicked or etched or anything. I checked a cylinder for TDC and torqued the arms down on that one. It took 6 90 deg turns of the torque wrench (540 deg total or 1 and 1/2 complete turns) to get them to 22 ft/lbs. I am redoing each one just to ensure I didn't under/over tighten one.

OK, so I tried a different tactic. I only had one Rocker Arm that was shot, so I went to GM and got a replacement. I then reinstalled the 15 other and 1 new and it fired up like a champ. I have no idea what the issue was with the Harland Sharp arms, but I am not going to put them back in. Any one interested in a slightly used set of SLS17 Harland Sharp rocker arms for an LS1/6 motor?

Also, is it recommended to go back in and re-torque the rocker arms after a certain amount of mileage/time?

Were you measuring 1-1/2 turns from zero lash?

when ever you change things in the valve train (rockers in your case) you need to check lifter preload by measuring with a pushrod checker.Your stock pushrods where probally too long and keeping the valves open when they were supposed to be closed resulting in your miss and rough running.
