Default Crank rotation?

Short story: Crank needed to be reground by machine shop. New main bearings going in. Installed the main caps per the service manual...torque + angle. No pistons or rods are installed. But the crank will NOT rotate freely by hand. This seems crazy to me based on my 4cyl and V6 building experiences. Sanity check please. Crank should rotate freely correct?

I think the shop gave me new bearings that are way too thick. Thoughts?

Thanks.

Yes, it should spin quite easily. I'd recommend checking clearances with Plastigage, even if you think it's right.

OK thats what I thought. Thanks. How much do the bolts need to be torqued when I do the plasigage check. Do the bolts need the full 80deg?
THanks again.

No, do you think that should have been done since the crank was reground?

I thought that moving up to thicker bearings (+.010" I think) would compensate for the material removed on the crank. You would think that the machine shop would have known to do that if it was necessary. WTF.

Torque the caps down as if you were doing final assembly then pull them and check your plastigauge.

OK. Ill give that a try. I was only torquing down the inner bolts cuz I figured that was good enough. Plus those bolts are torque to yield, so I didnt want to waste my new ones. I'll try the plastigage again torquing all the bolts down and see if it is any different. My initial check with just the inner bolts torqued showed the bearing clearances ~.050mm (which is on the big side).

In which case, if the clearances are that big in the y-direction I cant understand what would bind the crank up like that other than it needing an align hone. Ill let you guys know what I find tomorrow (its late). Thanks for the tips so far.

It's because you didn't install the side bolts.

very important step. And if the side bolts are left loose they will leak lots of oil.
