Worth it sleeving a block for a grocery getter?
Well I picked up a blown up LS1 from my buddy today. I knew the engine was toast and he said the block might still be ok. It came with the heads and intake on it, longblock minus the oilpan.
Pulled the head off, found number 6 piston GONE. Rod snapped right after the crank journal. So many pieces of metal in the engine and tore up the number 6 cylinder. Found a snapped piece of ring in one of the lifter trays
Anyways my question is, is sleeving the block even worth it if I'm not running spray or boost? I bought the engine for $50 and I said if the blocks good I'll piece together a runner for my DD S10 and toy around with that. If it's bad, I'll sell the heads intake and use the block for my LQ4 Malibu project. However taking it apart looking down, the cylinder looks like I can resleeve it but there is damage to the block below the cylinder. Attached is a picture with my cell phone (appoligies can't find my digital camera right now).
Also found the p/s cylinder head is toast thanks to the piston wanting to leave the premises via the spark plug hole.

To have a good sleeve installed and block machined, you could probably just buy a good used block for that price. It's not like you didn't get in the motor at a steal even with out the block so I would just get a different one and throw it together. Too many horror stories from no name machine shops installing sleeves and then the sleeve dropping. To have a good company do the work it will cost you more than another block. That's the way I would go.

Since you have an LS1 block we would have to sleeve it with our Superdeck I system. The sleeves, Superdeck I system, machining, cylinder hone, doweled billet main caps, align hone/bore, stress relieved and cleaned would run you 2600.00 but we can hone it out to a 4.200 bore. Just depends on what you're wanting to do with it.
If it was an LS2/LS3 we could just sleeve it with our Dry Sleeve kit for 1550.00.

Alright cool thanks everyone for the replies. Just wanted to see what it would be before I jumped in headfirst into a 2ft. swimming pool. I think I'm going to sell the pieces I don't need, use it for a mock up since it weighs 60lbs. in my Malibu project, and maybe make a cool table when I'm done with it.
