Default Valve Seals Swap (checklist)

I'm gathering the items I need to swap out the valve seals on my stock 00 LS1. I currently have comp 918s on there, which probably only have about 2k miles.

I initially didnt swap the valve seals because it was not smoking too bad, but after I did springs the smoking is getting to be excessive.

I dont want to mess around with the top dead center for the valves, because it makes it trickier to get the retainers back on since the valve drops a little.

I want to order a fitting for the spark plug hole and use a compressor to help.

Where can I find this online? any links would help.

Also, is there anything I need to know when doing valve seals on the 00 stock 853 heads?

Engine currently has around 103k miles.

Thanks!

Get the GM seals. Since you are running 918's, you may want to consider upgrading to the later seal design where the seat is part of the seal. These are less likely to come off the guide. If you stay with the earlier design, there is a measurement in the manual to ensure they are properly seated. Make sure you use a tool (or in a pinch a socket) that will only touch the metal part of the seal so the seal isn't damaged during installation.

I was going to order off of thunder racing, what seals do they sell?

Anyone know where to purchase the attachment for the spark plug hole?

Would there be any issue installing the new valve seats on the 00 853 heads? I just want to be sure I dont order seals and seats that dont work.

Well I'm off to order parts....let me know if you guys think of something. Thanks!

You still need to bring the cylinders to TDC as a safety net

Felpro seals work just fine and can be had @ your local parts for for around $20-25. That's what I use on all my engines.

No it doesn't. TDC is the most efficient way to do Valve Springs/Seals IMO. The valves do not drop far enough to cause a problem. Just compress the spring all the way down. You'd rather spend 10-15 minutes on EACH cylinder wrestling with an air hose and trying to line it up in the hole properly? Especially #7 and #8. Good luck. I'll take my 3 seconds to spin the motor 90* and have 2 cylinders @ TDC.

It's simple. A duck bill pair of pliers or skinny channel locks to reach in there and yank the old seal off. Then take your pinky finger, dip it in some oil, and put a layer of it on the inside of the seal. Set it on top of the guide, and lightly tap it in place with a hammer and 12mm socket. Once you hear a "thud" sound, it's bottomed out and doesn't need to be hit anymore. Rinse/repeat 15 more times.

Good luck.
