Best way to pull off heads without coolant everywhere

Default Best way to pull off heads without coolant everywhere

Whats the best way to pull heads without dumping coolant all over the place? Would I be able to pull the coolant sensor on the driver side and the plug on the pass side and get most of the coolant out?

I read a trick on here and it worked for me. Once the water pump is removed, take a strong shop vac and suck out the remaining fluid via the passages on the front of the motor. I did this, pulled the heads and had hardly any fluid left over that went into the head bolt holes.

you can also take a small clear hose and siphon the fluid going through the water pump holes.

I did this with a Miti-Vac, put a clear small line down into the block and pumped it dry. There will still be some residual in the heads though that you can't get out.

An equally or even better way is to remove the starter and pull the coolant plug from under the engine block.

I found this drains more coolant out than a shop vac (which I have used in the past). The engine block, water pump and radiator and all dumped this way.

That was my feeling. Since the provision is there.

Also in general, people will always drain the radiator first, and then remove the lower radiator hose off the pump and you tend to get the majority. In most cases this will be all that you need to do.

^^^that is the right way to do it and fully agree with the last 2 posts. But in the past i have used the shop vac to get as much out as possible through the waterpump inlets, then duct taped a straw to the shopvac to get as much out as possible with a little redneck engineering. It worked for me that way to but it isn't the right way to do it though. The good thing about using the coolant plugs is that you will be getting out all the old coolant too which isn't a bad thing.
