Default H/C and now smoke...

Just got done installing worked over 806's and TSP 228r cam, started the car last night for about 30 seconds to verify oil pressure and everything, seemed fine. No smoke. Now today I filled up the radiator and as soon as I got the cooling system filled theres smoke, I'm assuming its burning antifreeze from somewhere. I did use the graphite gaskets, even though the tabs on the 806's were already welded. Will it go away after the gaskets get heat cycled or is this thing fucked?

It runs fine, and idles OK, tries to die out at light throttle but its still on the stock tune so thats to be expected.

well the color of the smoke is one indicator-
white smoke=burning water/coolant
black= rich/fuel
blue= oil

also check u'r coolant, see if it looks dirty with oil and vise versa, check oil for the milkshake look. and obviously it would be low on coolant if it's burning it.

i hope it's no biggy for ya

Its continuing to smoke, it smells like oil, I can't really say by the color. Not sure why it would be burning oil, it never did before. It only smokes at idle, not while driving. I'm thinking rings but again, the shortblock was untouched. I just changed the oil and it looked fine.

Did you seal the rocker bolts? If your heads are worked, your rocker bosses were probably removed and it can suck oil past the bolt into the chamber. Just a simple thought.

Yes, I used thread sealer and loctite. I'm about to pull the valve cover to check the rocker that I had to helicoil, so I will see if I can see anything there.

The other thing is, at idle its a small amount, but when you first start it up its a big cloud. Maybe valve seals? Seems like its gathering up in one of the cylinders.

Did you replace the seals?

I hate to say it but when I did my first valve seal replacement last year, I didn't get my exhaust valve seals down all way and it did exactly what your saying.

I was stupidly afraid that it was my rings, but I did my head swap as you see below and had a shop assemble the heads for me. It just smells like a non catted car now.

My body shop whos had the car for a couple of weeks has said he hasn't seen anything, and he pulls it in his shop every night.

The 350's from the late eighties smoked on start up, it was the seals. If you used the umbrella seals, check for one that is riding up and down with the valve and on the guide. That will certainly do it.

When I pulled my heads back off a couple of months ago, I was HOPING it would be simple and obvious.

When I took the springs off the valve and moved it up and down the seal would move with it and it was a.. "Well.. there's my problem!" moment.

I did not, but they were gone through before I got them so I assumed they were good. Is there any way to tell if they're on right or not be looking?

I really don't see a way of being able to see the valve seals through the springs.. you might be able to pop the intake off and look into your runners with a flashlight and see if your getting oil down there. Hmm.. the back might/would be hard to see and you might have to use a little mirror.

I am a novice on doing the compression/leakdown tests and everything, so I don't know if any of those would/could help/diagnose, maybe someone else can chime in.

Well I found the problem. Its not burning oil or water, I'm not getting spark to my #8 cylinder. I went to change the plugs today and found out the #8 only threads in about 1/4 of the way. Of course it would be #8, why the hell make my life any easier. Is there anything I can realistically do without pulling the head off again?
