What would I tell them? I have no knowledge of the engine it was in or what kind of driving was done on it, nor if it was sprayed, boosted, etc.

I'm gonna send them an email and say "hey I bought this cam used and it is damaged, but that's all I can tell you about it" and they're going to go "okaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy???".

there should be a part number, possibly some kind of date stamp. any info on a faulty cam will help them. they're not just gonna be like "oh, a cam failed. sucks..."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is an LS1 not a "roller" cam/engine?
GM phased out flat tappet cams in the early 90's. All LTx/LSx engines are rollers

It's a "Cam Motion" 228/232 575/588 113 cam.
I would make sure to call cam motion the had some bad futral cams back in 05 maybe these could be the same cores? Its worth the time to call and ask just in case.

I wouldn't use it I had the same thing happen to me recently only it was with the cam I had in the car.. I just changed my cam out that had 45k miles on it i estimate for piece of mind. I bought it with 20k and put 25k on it but due to some valve floating issues it took the cam out along with a few other things...

Seller told me to ship the cam back for a refund. I shipped it today, sent the seller the tracking number, and he immediately refunded my full purchase price. He even offered to refund my return shipping cost as well but I declined.

I will advise him to communicate with cam motion about the damage. He claims that he had the engine built by a shop or bought the engine already built by a shop, with the cam already installed, or something to that effect...so it seems more appropriate for him and the shop to approach the manufacturer than for me, some random dude who bought a used cam secondhand months/years after it was sold.

IN any case I had also bought a used set of comp 918 springs to use with this cam, but now that this has happened I am buying everything brand new. Anybody have recommendations for a good place to get a package deal on new comp cam, springs, and pushrods from one vendor? I want a cam in the 228-232 range, up to 600 lift, going into a 34k mile rebuilt LS6 with 0.030 shaved heads that I'll be swapping into my 85 corvette auto as a weekend cruiser.

Well...yeah, I knew that. I was asking as a rhetorical question to the guy who made the comment,

I have sold several used cams that were in great shape, but a roller cam is the only thing I would ever buy used.

I used TSP for my cam kit, I couldnt be happier. Sounds like a TSP torquer V.2 is what you need, its 232/234 and under .600 lift. I got mine on a 112 LSA.

Exactly, they have ways of tracing build dates and/or core materials and such to help narrow down a bad batch of whatever was faulty. Plus if no one reports it, the problem may not be fixed, leading more people to having issues. But I understand leaving it to the original owner of the cam. Hopefully he does the right thing.
