LS1 engine removal questions

Default LS1 engine removal questions

I'm currently in the process of removing the LS1 from my 2002 Camaro.

I'm using this guide:

On this step:

Step 17 FIREWALL WIRING

There are 2 bundles of wire coming from the interior of the car through a grommet on the lower portion of the firewall behind the passenger-side wheel housing. Remove the grommet carefully, carefully pull the wire into the engine bay, just enough to zip-tie the connectors to the engine bay. Dont let them fall back in or you will have to start pulling stuff out of the interior.
I'm not quite sure where this bundle of wires is?

and on this step:

Step 21 OIL LEVEL SENSOR

Lift the tang on the oil level sensor and pull it off.
Maybe I'm not sure what sensor is being referred to? Is it the one on the passenger side attached to the oil pan? If so, I don't see a way to remove the wires other than unscrewing it?

lastly:

Step 24 ALTERNATOR

Use a 13mm socket to remove the constant power nut on the back of the alternator.
I'm having a hard time finding the nut on the back of the alternator - all I can see/feel is a rubber boot?

Any advice? Thanks a bunch!

I have yet to remove an engine from one of these cars. (That will change in the future.) But I think I can help you on two out of three of your questions.

I'm not quite sure where this bundle of wires is?
I'll have to pass on this one. Again, having never done this, I'm just not familiar enough to give you any advice. I'm sure someone will chime in to point you in the right direction.

You are correct. The Oil Level Sensor is located on the Passenger side of the oil pan. The top of the wiring harness connector has a clip that needs to be released in order for the wiring to be disconnected from the sensor. Its difficult to see from below (which is really your only vantage point), but the top of the sensor itself has a square notch out of it so you can use a small screwdriver to access the clip on the connector and release the tang. Like I said you really can't see it, but trust me its there. Feel around and you'll figure it out.

The nut you need, is behind the boot. Pull the boot back and you'll see it. You'll need an extension to access it with a socket. And don't forget to disconnect the single wire harness from the alternator as well. If you don't, you will most definitely break it.

Disconnect the 2 large harness connectors from the PCM and remove the PCM and bracket from the car by removing the 2 10mm bolts. The grommet you are looking for goes thru the firewall directly below the PCM.

Its just 2 connectors. The grommet is located under the PCM.
Odds are the connectors are clipped to something inside.
Most people just remove the side panal and kick panel then unplug them.
Then pull the grommet from the engine bay.

this may be a dumb question....but what does unhooking those connectors matter? the engine harness stay in the car and you just disconnect the motor from it?

No, it's best to disconnect the Harness from the Car and leave it with the Engine. Just leave all the loose harness on top the intake and it will fall out with the engine....

Best way is out the BOTTOM, though it's a lil tough if you do not have a car lift..... It can be done as I did it that way the first time...

My Bro ended up sittiing on the R R corner of the car as it wanted to sag on the L F.... Oh what fun....

another dumb question...it appears as though the wiring harness goes both over and under some of the ac plumbing...it doesnt appear the harness will drop with the motor the way its wrapped around the ac equipment...im not running ac anyway so recharging isnt important to me...but how to i work around that.

It's been a while, but I believe the one that goes under has heat shielding tape on it? If so just unplug the connectors on that strand and pull it back from under the AC hoses.

YES, U have to go under the car and drop the starter, disconnect the Oil level sender and the Crankshaft sensor. Pull that harness up on top the A/C Evap unit.

Then everything else will drop out with the engine.

Forgot to mention that....
