Default Engine removal from the top

Are you able to leave the trans in the car? I have a th400. I know you will have to unbolt the converter and the bellhousing bolts. I ask because I have a small garage and I'm going to have to roll the car in and out.

yes you can, that is the only way i do it. support the tranny with a jack until the motor is out. then i have a peice of pipe that i lay on top of the frame rails, and run two 3/8 bolts x4 long thru the bellhousing and let the tranny down on them.

It can be done. It helps to remove the hood or unbolt them from the hood shocks and stand it straight up for more clearance.

Coming out the bottom is soooooo much easier though.

It can be done, but at the point you are unbolting the tranny and converter, just drop the tranny down out of the way. If you are tight on space, just leave it under the car while it is in the garage or put it in the corner. It will have one less thing in the way you are fighting. I prefer taking them out the top. Especially when I had the TH350 in my car. You can have the tranny out in 30 minutes and the motor out in about 45.

Well I've decided to wait and do it after christmas and drop it out the bottom in the driveway since i'm going to put in my turbo kmember. What kind of rollers do y'all use to that has enough strength to hold the engine and trans?

I just pulled my engine but w/ a T56. I had the engine down to the bare short block, detached it from the tranny and pulled it out the top. Found it the easiest way since the car is in a garage and height was an issue.

I don't remember the hood being a problem. Seperating the trans, then getting it back on by myself from under the car was the hardest part of the R&R for me. If I could do it again, I would try to pull them out together. Then again, I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than do this again without more space, a lift and air tools.

I'm going to get a moving dolly and tow strap from harbor freight and take the engine and trans out from the bottom.

It's going to make what I have to do much easier. I have a turbo kit on that was a giant pain in the dick to put on, I'll be able to take it off and on outside of the car. I'm also going to be putting in a bmr turbo k member, SJM ABS delete and line lock in, new fuel system, and relocate my fuse boxes.
