JRP, FWIW, when I miked the stock cam that cam out of my low-mileage 2001 Camaro, I measured 0.478 lift on both the exhaust and intake as advertized by GM. I've always heard that the 2001 and 2002 fbody and truck cams are identical.

ya, the 01-02 fbody cams are the same as the 6.0l cams. advertised specs on the cams from the ls1/ls6 chevy book are

197/207 .467/.479 116lsa

which is pretty much spot on to what comps spec'd theres too. i should spec my 98 cam and see what it comes out to.

Well in the GM 2001 Camaro/Firbird "F" Shop Manual, it specs the cam at 0.274 intake and 0.281 exhaust. After you multiply by 1.7 you get 0.466 intake and 0.478 exhaust. I don't know what GM's manufacturing tolerance is, but if they are like Thunder Racing the actual lift could vary +/- a couple of thousandths. No mater how you look at it though, this cam is just too small IMO. I think I'll go back and change my original post from .478 on the intake to .466 so I'm not spreading bad information.

It looks like pre 01 cars had better cams. They have more lift and durration. A stock pre 01 cam migth make more power in a 01-02 car than an 01-02 cam.

Yes, that's true. My theory is GM decided to use the LS6 intake manifold on both engines to save tooling costs, but in doing so made the Fbody LS1 too close in power to the Ybody LS1, so they threw the 6.0L truck cam in there to detune it a bit. In reality the difference between the two LS1 cams is too small to make it worth a cam swap, though.

I you're thinking about a cam, the one I have is a very good street cam. If you don't have to pass emissions or worry about idle quality, I sugest the MTI X1 or Thunder TR230, or something else in the 230 degree range.

Thanks guys for all the responces. I'm thinking about a Z06 cam for now. Eventually I want a nice lopy cam that will give me power with good road manners. But that will wait for heads.

Changing a cam is a lot of work to do twice; I'd just get a TR224 114 cam and be done with it. It will idle very smooth with a good tune. Z06 cam is a bit low on duration IMO.

if he does the ls6 cam with some 918's first time around, swapping in a new cam the 2nd time around isnt that bad. but i agree, just get the bigger cam first to begin with.

Questions on valvetrain. I have a 98 f-body and seems power is going flat around 5000 rpms. I know the 98's have a bigger cam. My question is im fixing to install a ls6 intake, Lt's with ory and exhaust system. Also get rid of egr and cats. Should I install valve springs? will it help or are the cams going pertty much flat at those rpm's. It also has a M6

I think the stock cam usually peaks at about 5200 rpms.
