Default cam questions plz help

My question is, I am going to buy a 2002 camaro ss win a comp cam from texas speed with a 230/230 lift and duration and wanted to know is there a lot of upkeep on these? I've heard they need to be tuned about every month is that true?

Not true on the tune. May need valve springs from time to time, but those would be at intervals of tens thousands of miles depending largely on the lift of the cam.

230/230 is duration for intake/exhaust. The lift will be measured in .001". Once you tune the car you are set unless you do another large upgrade.

ok so the .613/.591 would be the lift and duration? those are the numbers he gave me. When I go to test drive the car, what is the easiest way for me to make sure the cam has no problems without taking it to a mechanic? cause he lives fairly far from me so I cant work on it at home.

Find out what springs are in there. If their stock you NEED to upgrade.

Thing is if the guy put the cam in without the springs he prob has no idea what he's doing and might have skimped elsewhere.

Driveability is all u have too look for. Its all in the tune. Make sure when coming to a stop the car doesn't surge real bad, watch the tach and listen to the car, it shouldn't rev and then almost die. Cam that size should perform well on the big end but down low might be a lil slow reving till it gets up in the rpm's. GL

230/230 = intake duration in degrees/exhaust duration in degrees
.613/.591 = intake lift in .001"/exhaust lift in .001"

Duration is the amount of time in degrees relative to crankshaft rotation the valve is open. Lift is the physical amount it opens.

There are many different valvesprings out there. One set may be good for 30k miles where the next for only 12k. Find out what they are and put a little research time into it

Not that it matters but that sounds like a Predator Z cam.... It is probably on XFI/X-ER lobes and is 230/230 .612/.594 111LSA Ask the guy if it is the El Torro cam.....

When I drove the car today, it seemed just fine. Didn't surge at all, rpms never dropped. It seems fine but then he mentioned that once in a great while it will seem like it almost dies but dosent and he said it only did that a few times. Should I beware or is it probably just in need of a tune?

I dont know. I want this car, but if I buy it it will be my only car and dont know how well it will perform as a daily driver. He does have the stock cam and stall however so i might look at putting those back in for a while.

my tune in my car is awesome, but sometimes my car will still surge, just have to two foot it. Im sure with a lil more tuning it can be corrected a lil better, but honestly I don't mind it because it might do it twice outta a month. If u like the car, and it feels good, and the price is what your looking to spend, go for it.

and as far as putting the other stall and cam back in, that would be too much of a PITA, drive it for awhile, at most if it is acting up on a constant basis, have a tuner look at it, if none of that works out maybe go to a smaller cam, one with more drivability and a lil tuner friendly.

Thats a small cam to be surging like that. I might try cleaning the MAF and see if that stops it from surging.
