Default Tapping head for temp sensor

I know everyone uses the extra hole on the left head and I know you can buy an adapter to fit an autometer gauge but Im using a mechanical gauge which is a 1/2" fitting. There is no adapter that reduced to the 12x1.5mm on the head. Is it safe to drill the hole bigger and rethread it?

I have an extention since the mechanical sensor is about 2" long. This will keep the sensor from going in the head too far and causing any possible clearance issues.

I didnt find any answers doing a search. Any help is appreciated.

A lot of people have drilled them for 3/8npt but I haven't heard of anyone going that big.

I would make an adapter personally before I drilled and tapped the hole any bigger. Get two correct ended adapters and weld em together.

That welding thing is a good idea but I think the sensor is too big in diameter to fit inthe existing hole along with the 12x1.5 adapter fitting

I was thinking about it but I already have $700+ in gauges and I can't return this one. I may just bite the bullet and do that though.

I drilled and tapped the right 243 head for an Autometer mechanical gauge where the metric plug was. It wound up being bigger than 1/2" if I remember correctly but the sensor fit all the way into the head with no problem. HTH.

Yea I bit the bullet and got an electric one from ebay. Ended up saving $50 off the Jegs prices too. So if anyone needs a nice mechanical gauge i have one for sale lol.
