Default Cam bearing installation... Help please

one of my friend took his truck to a mechanic shop here localy for a cam swap but when they tried removing the cam it was sum how hitting the cam bearing. so at the end they ended putting everything together. then after 2-3 weeks he brougth the truck over to the shop for the cam swap and taking care of the cam bearings. ok so we take evrything apart and notice the cam got stuck like 1/4 out... and after messing around with the cam it wouldnt come out and we pulled it out and slip 1 of the cam bearings 2nd to the last and we managed to take it out. so my question is... is there sum kind of way or trick to install the bearings with out removing the engine of the truck. also can i just replace the only bearing it slip off or will i need to install all four bearings.?/?

Well, you cant buy just one cam bearing , they come in a set, so you might as well replace them all. If you the motor you are talking about is an LS motor, You cant install the cam bearings with it in the truck, You have to have the crank out to be able to position the bearing into place and assure it is installed correctly.. At least thats the way I know to do it. Also I believe the cam bearings are not all the same on the O.D. They start with the smallest and then go up in size to the front, at least thats what I have always been told.

Did the shop put dowels in to hold up the lifters before removing the cam?

What he means is that if they did not push rods in to hold lifters up, they can fall down & they are what can trap the cam inside the block & then can fall down into the engine once the cam is pulled. Cam bearings can be changed w/ motor in as long as lifters are held up. LS motors aren't like the older sbc where the rear freeze plug is an issue that requires the cam bearings to be swapped w/ engine removed. So, unless the lifters have dropped, the cam bearings can be changed w/ engine in vehicle. Bearings must be removed & installed in the correct sequence. They are different sizes. Although, the rear cam bearing removal can be a problem without rear cover removed, it depends.

There is also the question on line boring of the bearings. Do a search, a lot of guys have replaced them only to have them spin and someone found out the factory will line bore them if necessary.

Sounds to me that they didn't take proper precautions with the lifters and then forced the cam out along with the bearing. Shop sounds like a hack.

Hello poeple , the #'s 1 & 5 bearings O.D.s are 2.3260" , the #'s 2 & 4 bearings O.D.'s are 2.3161" and the # 3 bearing O.D. is 2.3063" . So I would think that to do bearing 4 and/or 5 either the back seal cover would need to be removed or the crankshaft be removed ?
