Default Valve Spring Maintenance

Hello All,

You guys have helped me with dialing in a build that's perfect for my needs -- for that I thank you. Just short of 575 rwhp on a 125 shot of N2O with great street manners and plenty of N/A power under the curve.

Now that my setup is complete and has been running smoothly for a couple years, I have a "maintenance" question.

Went with Comp Cams 928 springs with the relatively mild cam below (228/230 .585/.585, 112 LSA). I got a set of 918s in a kit I bought from TEA, however Vengeance made the decision to use 928s for the install citing the issues Comp Cams were having with 918 failures a couple years ago. For that I'm most grateful! The rating on the 928s are well in excess of the cam's max lift, however after a couple years (and 15,000 miles) of use and occassional abuse is it time to change them out?

How often should I look to change the springs? Anything else I should look to maintain while we're in there?

Thanks!

Those springs will last a whole lot longer than 15,000 miles on a cam that size. You can pull them and see what kind of spring pressure they still put out. But I would not worry about it at 15,000 miles. I ran a set of those on a cam with similar specs and replaced them at 45,000 miles and checked them and they were still good when I replaced them.

It all relates to pressures and valvetrain issues. Pull a couple like slt200 said below and have them checked. Other things such as lifters, cam bearings or even rocker trunions might wearout first.

Thanks for the input guys. Sounds like I'm likely OK with the springs for a little while longer.

^Yep. Personally, I'd check spring pressure every few thousand miles. Cheap insurance. However, like said above, those spring should last a while with such mild lift.

I made it 28k miles on a TR230 on 918's before I went to duals just for hopes of a larger cam. We checked about 6 of them and they were boarderline but I bet they would have gone a few thousand more miles. I would say you are good on the springs for now.

I have been running my Patriot Gold Dual kit on my 224/.581 cam for about 60k miles
