Default 5.3 cam

i recently got a 5.3L motor and was looking at putting a set of AFR 205 heads with a 228/228 cam, however i was told i should go a little bigger because i want more lope like a 232/236.
is that too big a cam for a heads/cam/longtube 5.3 motor?
some people say the 228 is a big cam for 5.3 and some told me the larger was ok
help
thanks

a 224 cam is a nice size for the 5.3 i wouldnt go over 228 unless u plan on increasing compression above 10.1... big cams kill dcr and that is gonna take all your low end.

talk to Patrick-G you would benefit from a custom cam with those heads.what gears and and trans?you will need lots of toque to move a heavy truck.too much lope- over lap will make it slow out of the hole.

how big a stall converter will you go with.the the higher the stall the bigger the cam you can work with.how much dose a s10 weigh?how tall of tire?I was thinking of a c1500 weight earlier, sorry.the s10 is a good platform for a hot rod.

No need for afr heads on a 5.3. A stock milled set of 243/799 will get the job done with l33 5.3HO/5.7 head gaskets and a patg spec cam

Check my sig for numbers and parts.

Cam is right on the limits for the motor, low end is pretty much gone, but shes a screamer up top. Kinda hard to tune, plan on bumping your idle a good 150-200 rpms to keep it running. I dd the car in the summer and sometimes its just to much. Bumping the CR should help a ton.

For a 3800 pound truck you really should stay at or below 224 degrees on the intake side. The Comp 224/228 on a 112 LSA does good in the 5.3 and would work well with the AFR heads. This cam will lope plenty in the 5.3 and is the max I would recommend.

thanks for the replys guys,
i thought the 5.3 was designated lq4, what is it called then?
my lt1 made 320/295 at the wheels and it had a nasty first and second then fell off in third gear, what kind of power and times am i looking at with the new motor heads/cam/headers?
and the heads/cam come with the right length pushrods, if i want to say shave the heads and put thin gaskets, what will that do to the pushrods

ok well that afr deal fell through so i went ahead and bought a 226/229 58x lift and 112lsa and some ls2 heads. however, i am now going to bore it to an ls1 bore and go with forged internals and spray, so is that cam going to be big enough in an ls1

There are quite a few RPO codes for the 5.3L. Different variations.
You might be thinking of the LM4 which is a 5.3L Alum heads and block.

plenty of people run 224's and 228's and make great power in a 5.7. you'll be fine. the wilder side of the 5.7's gets up into the 240's and .6-.65 lift....
