Default What is a pushrod valve gear

I've built a dozen motors, so my knowledge isn't thin, but what is this pushrod valve gear that the LS1/LS6 has and what is it's purpose?

could they mean a "pushrod actuated valve gear" (valve gear = valve train)?

The term "valve gear" is an old term for the system that operated the valve to admit air/steam/fuel/etc....

Come on, the guy asked a legitimate question so give a real answer.

A pushrod Valve Gear is a miniature gear inside of each pushrod. I am sure that you have seen a number of post on bending pushrods with missed shifts or mechanical overevs. The aftermarket has addressed this with a new style pushrod. This has a gear actuated valve inside the pushrod to allow for beed down in a situation that would bend a normal pushrod. These are new and somewhat untested to date. I have not purchased them myself as cost is a factor. Also do not know if any sponsors carry them yet.

Do all you comedians remember that "gear" is a word with multiple meanings?

I found the likely source of Rocket-Doc's confusion on the Idaho Corvette Webpage www.idavette.net in a description of the 2001 LS6 engine.

This new Gen III puts out 385hp at 6000 rpm and 385lbs/ft torque at 4800rpm. A dozen years of engine technology advancement gets us 10 horsepower and 15 pounds/feet torque with identical peaks. If that doesn’t seem like much, consider that improvement comes from an engine with: slightly less displacement, smaller physical size, only one cam, only two valves-per-cylinder, pushrod valve gear, less weight and better fuel mileage.
The point is that this engine doesn’t have overhead camshafts. Rather it has “pushrod valve gear”
