Default Need input on new cam selection

Been in touch with Comp to get a new cam. They are recommending the 54-424-11 (xr265hr). Duration is 265/271 (212/218). Valve lift specs out with my 1.8 rockers at .590/.596 lift. 383 cubes, m6 car, with stock port/polished heads, exhaust, ls6 intake. Already have supporting mods (springs, retainers, lifters, etc). Currently I'm at 550ish range of lift and looking for a little more but car is a daily driver.
What are your opinions, thoughts, smart *** comments, etc?

compcam has a cam quest you could try different cams a see what cam works best.maybe look at a lsr cams for ls engines, they will make a little more power.54-455-11 will make more power then 54-424-11 ,and make it at lower rpms.or contact Patrick-G and get cam better then a shelf cam.

Just checked the 54-455-11 and thats gonna push the limit of my springs (.600 max on springs) at .650-ish lift with the 1.8 rockers. Can anyone running this similar setup with the .600 lift range tell me what I should expect with the xr265hr - not so much powerwise, but more of idle quality, streetability, sound/obnoxiousness, etc.

that cam will be very mild with your 383. Most guys dont go smaller then a 224/224 on the stock 346. What are your goals for the car in terms of power and drivability?

Driveability first, power second. I baby the car for the most part. I rarely "show off". Every once in a while I'll play on the street with other cars. I cannot race the car at 1/4 mile track anymore because I won't install a cage in this car.
My goal is to add power yes, but without sacrificing driveability and dependability. I have not taken it past 6k rpms since I've owned it, and probably never will. So my ultimate goal is to maximize my power in the rpm range that I use -- not so much in a range of rpms the car will never see.

Do you have longtube headers or no? that will be a big factor in the cam selection.

Currently there is not longtubes installed. However that is the other thing that is getting installed with the cam.

Ive read alot of people like that particular cam who want just what your looking for, great low & mid range but with a little more power up top.
What LSA were you looking at getting? That cam would even be more tame in a 383.

lift is not as important when making power, duration,LSA,and ICL are.I would get some upgraded stock rockers and get a cam that make power the way you want it.get a custom cam from 1 of the cam guys on this thread.

lobe separation angle is 115. total duration is 265/271 with 212/218 at .050.
I do believe the duration at .050 will be a little broader on my setup with the higher ratio rockers.
I am buying a cam either scenario, so I'd rather find one to best suit the rockers I already have, versus buying different rockers as well.

Any ideas on the tr224 with my setup instead of the xr265hr high lift?

Give me a call and we can discuss your goals, that comp cam is suited more for a 5.3 in a truck than a 383 in a Camaro imo. Chris, 817-750-2000

agreed i would call a sponsor and for sure get a bigger cam. the tr224 on 114 will drive like stock in your car with that 383 and a good tune. That cam will also be easy on your valvetrain.
Another cam to consider would be this one.

Thank you guys for all of your input - I'm going to get as much advice from a few sponsors and local hotrod shops before I commit. I realize I'm still being a little conservative, lol.

With that cam, you will have very good idle, great street manners, does not require tuning. It is a LS6 replacement cam. Use with your stock rockers.
I am thinking about getting it also as it will drive better than the cam in my Sig.

mmmm since when does any cam change 'not' need a tune, do you really believe that all cams are exactly identical & all engines read that cam exactly the same.

The major dilemma I'm faced with is do I keep the cam rather small so I can keep my current valve spring and rocker setup, or get a cam the engine more likely deserves but then be forced to change rockers springs etc. If I did it the second way I guess I'm just a little nervous about it being too much for me - as in too obnoxious or annoying to drive as a daily driver. Its getting a tune either way.

And I know lift doesn't dictate the driveability of the cam.

I already have the 918 springs (up to .600 lift) and no longer have stock rockers. I have 1.8 ratio rockers.
