Default tr224 or ms4

Hey guys, I got a quick question about my lq4 and cam decision. Heres my specs so far:

1984 Trans Am converted to 1988 Formula

3.45 geared 9 bolt for now

2003 lq4 short block
factory dished pistons
TEA stage 3 5.3 heads with 58cc chambers
.650" lift springs
ls7 caddy lfters
Hardened pushrods

T56
spec 3+

I currently have a ms4 and a tr224 sitting on my shelf. Everyone tells me that the ms4 will give me piston to valve clearence problems.

What will the power differences be between the two cams?

Should I get my pistons fly cut so I can run my big cam?

I plan on running about a 100-125 shot on nitrous

Should I look into buying a new set of pistons for the spray taht are already fly cut?

What would you do in my situation?

just install it and measure with the ms4. Those are two very different cams and you will be changing those valves springs quite often with that ms4.

The ms4 will make better power and I really have not heard if it breaking springs that much. If you get texas speeds dual valve spring they reccomend it should be fine. Since you have dished pistons throw the ms4 in there and check the clearence you may be lucky

Its not really breaking springs, its wearing them out with a cam that size. From what i've seen breaking springs is a problem with the spring manufacturing or a problem with the way they were installed.

Definetly two completely different ends of the spectrum. If you do decide to go with the MS4 your going to need to be prepared to set the car up to take advantage of where this cam makes the big power and thats high in the rpm band. The MS4 is one of my favorites, but just from glancing over your mod list Texas Speed has many other cam choices that might better suite your needs. What exactly are you wanting out of this build?

I don't think you would be able to run the MS4 with the heads at a 58cc chamber without flycutting the pistons. Even with the stock dish there I think you would probably still have issues. Out of the two cams you have the 224R would be the way to go based on the piston to valve clearance.

If you purchase the PRC dual valvesprings with the MS4 you should be able to get between 20-25k miles before they need to be switched out. We usually recommend checking spring pressures around 15k miles.

The goals for the car are weekend cruiser/ weekend drag car. My friend has a ms3 in his 02 camaro and it's sick. I'm scared that the tr224 will be to small compared to what my heads flow and the 364 ci. If I just buy new pistons, can I clear the valves with the ms4? What pistons would work best for me?

Yea you could buy a set of pistons with valve reliefs machined in them to get the clearance you need. Give Texas Speed a call and go over all your specs with them and Im sure they can hook you up with what you need.

I decided on the ms3 and fly cutting my stock pistons. How far do I need to tell the machine shop to cut them? Also which rod bolts do I need? Katech? ARP? ARP Pro?

I know the katechs are very close to stock so you won't have to machine maybe tsp can chime in about the arp bolts. The machine shop will have to measure its the only way to know for sure how much to cut or you will have to.

I'm kinda leaning towards the katechs after all the arp stories I have saw on here. But aren't the katechs on back order? Where do I get them cheapest?

You get them from Katech..... Maybe some other vendors have them but start there...

OP .120 is the MOST recommended to cut.....

Would .120 clear a ms3 cam?

If I cut my pistons I'll avoid spray
