You'd be surprised what can and could make it's way through the filter. There are threads about builds/set ups going bad because of removed screens and debris getting inside. It's a gamble. Hopefully the odds will be in your favor.

I ordered a 100mm MAF to go with a 104MM lid. large part is ease of installation plus I KNOW I wont be leaving anything on the table from that aspect. I figured if I'm already putting this kind of money into the car whats a little more? Maybe the wrong outlook.

I don't think so. If you're putting on a 102 intake/102 TB, you might as well put on a 104 lid and 100 MAF to make sure there's no restrictions anywhere on the intake side. Just as long as it's tuned properly, you'll only gain power.

i have done the same, inst. fast 102 intake and t/b, and also put on 100mm maf and 104 air lid for insurance not to leave anything on the table from my 402, just have to get it tuned, runs like crap right now.

gm will tell you 1000 hp. but that is a lie. i have seen one gto go 2 years on the stock bottom end pushing 850 rwhp. if you are going to tear the engine down that far why not spend the extra and forge the bottom end. that way you can run what you want...

Wat do u mean by forge the bottum end? I saw rods that were rated at 650 hp for 350 bucks. Do u think its worth it?

How are you going to make the power? Boost or spray, replace the hyper pistons with forged. Revs, replace the rods. Crank is stout and will last north of 700 or so. I remember Harlan running ~1200hp on a stock crank back in the day.

Realistically if you're taking it all apart, might as well do it right once, and do the rods and pistons.

i would say on an untouched block, you dont want to go north of 600hp to the motor, about 520-550 to the rear. that is the safe zone, then the pistons tend to break and the rod bolts let go.
