Default Crank without a reluctor wheel question

Can I use an external crank trigger in place of a reluctor wheel and still retain the factory ecu? The crank I'm going to be picking up doesn't have a reluctor wheel and can't have one added.

Yes, the reluctor can be mounted anywhere

Why cant a reluctor be mounted on your crank? They press on/off

Gonna have to see pix for this. Unless the reluctor register was forged too small, as Pocket said they can be added...

There's no reluctor register. It has to be external. I Just need to know my options and still retain the factory ecu.

Take a pic of the area and post the crank brand so we know to stay away from them

Its not a flaw in the crank. It was made that way. Its a race crank, I just need to know if it can be made to use with the stock ecu. To my knowledge an external crank trigger needs an aftermarket ecu, but I'm trying to find out out if its possible not to go that route

If you mounted a gm crank wheel on the front of the crank and had a mount for the magnetic pickup made I suppose the pcm would not know the difference...they are lined up with the rod throws all at 90 degrees.

I've heard of a balancer than is made so you can mount it to it, but I havent been able to find any info on it. I'd rather not machine something for it, but I suppose I could.
