228R or MS3
Going to be doing a cam swap soon and looking at either the 228r or MS3.
The car is not a DD nor will it see track use. However, I would like it to pull hard all throughout the powerband without losing too much on the bottom. Realistically this car will run more often at 1000-4000rpm more so than redline.
I was thinking 228r but don't want to regret it and wish I would have went bigger. Is the MS3 too big for a weekend warrior or is the 228r better suited to what I'll be doing (just some occasional street races at stop lights) Thanks for any suggestions/recommendations.

if you do not plan on revving to high i think you would probably benefit from the 228. from what i understand the ms3 pulls like a train up to, so if you do not plan on revving real high i would go with the 228
The MS3 won't even start the meat of its pull until past 4k. But honestly most ls1 cams are going to start working best 3500+rpm.
Based on your post something around the 228r is much more in line with your goals.
Auto or manual? If auto you better have a stall, if not get that instead.

Yeah those are worlds apart man,the ms3,4 are great cams, but you have to set them up right, are you a auto or m6?the 228 is a great cam, will have a lot of low end, good power band, and great driver, I run a ms4 in my m6 ,I like it but I only drive it on the weekends, and I would not say this is a good cam for a driver, the ms4 just fit my goals better,I would look into eps, there cams are making great gains on smaller profiles,
For the time and money spent on a cam, i would definitely go with a bit bigger cam. You will kick yourself for not going a tad bigger especially if your tunes it spot on and drives smooth.
I would atleast go with something like the TSP Torquer 2 232/234 or the 233/239.

I forgot to mention the torquer 2 is another cam I was looking at. Would the torquer 2 be a good compromise between the 228r and MS3?
The car is an M6 for those asking. Full bolt ons.

My buddy had the V2 in his M6 SS. At 3k, it was starting to pull nice, by 3500 it was putting you back, and over 4k, my adrenaline was actually flowing... I was impressed by it! Very comparable to say... the F14, the another camm'ed LS1 I've been in
my ms3 cam have great drive-ability. I DD the car when its nice out. I take it to myrtle beach (960 mile one way trip) and get pretty insane gas mileage...but I went through 3 different tunes, and two different tuners to get in dialed in this way, the way I like it.
Basically what Im saying is, it comes down to the tune. Any size cam can be very streetable, as long as the person tuning it knows what he is doing.
as far as the ms3, I made 351rwhp, 355rwtq with just long tubes through the stock catback before it. After the cam install, tune and a catback I made 412rwhp, 381 rwtq. The feeling of the power band on the ms3 is pretty intense. It is sluggish below 3400rpms, but at 4k, its like spraying a instant 100 shot. It just turns on pretty harsh. I love it. My revv limiter is at 7100rpms, but I shift around 6600 on/off the bottle....however, even with my stock ls6 intake manifold and stock 241 heads, the power never fell off to 7k. It stayed linear at 410rwhp from 6500-7k.

I'm liking the sound of that except the sluggish part under 3400rpms. Would you say the sluggish part under 3400rpms is worse, equal or about the same as a stock ls1 cam? I need to narrow it down to either the torquer v2 or the MS3. They both sound like nice choices that will make some power.
here at my place, I had my dyno sheets side by side from the long tubes compared to the ms3 etc and I still gained power and torque as soon as the peddle hit the floor with the ms3 over the long tubes/ory...
so in other words, I didnt lose any power...I gained power.
I will actually see if I can find up my old thread in the search with my side by side comparison.

If you bother to upgrade gears switching from 3:42's to 3:73's will not justify the cost. At least go with 3:90's.
