Default Timing & Knock

Will an engine always lean out before it knocks (pre-ignition)??
If I don't ever let it get leaner than say 14.5:1 then it won't knock...wot would be no leaner than 13:1-ish??
Just checking because I have read a few posts about how the motor will lean out if the timing is advanced which makes sense.
So...can wideband = knock sensor??

I should add that I don't have knock sensors on my application so I am looking for another way to tell me that I am in the "danger zone" with too much timing. I guess the bottom line is, does the motor always lean out (over 14.7:1) before pre-ignition (knock)?? Or, can you get knock if it is richer than that??

I'm not an expert but you can get knock before 14.x:1

That is what I was thinking but I was hoping to have someone confirm that with lots of testing they had done, with a wideband etc.

Running without knock sensors is a sure recipe for trouble. Why can't you run them?

So how are you firing the spark plugs? No computer at all? these newer engines arn't like the old cast iron carbed motors. They could soak up all that knocking and stay together, these engines will split the cylinder walls if it knocks hard.

I have an MSD 6010 ignition...specifically designed for the LSx motors. No computer at all unless the 6010 counts.

Its designed for LS motors without any knock sensor features? Dam I woooodn't use it, modern engines DEMAND modern electronics. You can tune your heart out and run it pig rich and still have it knock. Look at GM's stock tunes WITH knock sensors they still run them rich. GM doesn't like paying for broken pistons and cracked blocks.
I have ABSOLUTELY no knowledge when it comes to carbed LS1 engines, but i do know every time someone does a tune and turns the knock sensors off shortly there after they are looking at broken parts. I woooood research it some more, there has to be a better system out there for carbed LS engines.
