Default Holding Lifters up with 5/16 brake line or metal rod?

Hey guys im in the middle of a cam swap and im at the point where im ready to pull the cam and need something to hold the lifters up. I was planning on using 16 pen magnets but the local part stores and hardware places dont carry any or barely know what im talking about . Ive also heard bad things about magnets breaking off and such. I did a search but it always looked like guys did a lot of fab work to make a lifter tool, im working with limited tools so i dont have a bench grinder or torch/welder to use. I was thinking brake line is the way to go since i can probely bend that by hand to make some handles at the end, then i can kind of round off the end to make it easier to slide in. If i go with a solid rod i wont be able to bend it for the handles but have files i can round the end off with. Probley a stupid question but just wanted to know which route you guys would go. Dont really want to spend $105 for the JRP tool and wait a couple days for something i can get for much less at a local store. I need this car done soon, so any input is appreciated, thanks.

I bought 2 - 5/16" alum metal rods from McMaster Carr online. Do a search, it only cost about $20 plus a couple more for shipping.

I got my 5/16" metal rods at Home Depot and just bend the ends to form a handle.

You can get those cheap magnets at harbor freight. Put a little epoxy or super glue around the edge of the magnets to keep them from popping out.

I took a 5/16" steel rod and ground down one side so i could slide them all the way in easy with out trying to force them against the lifters, Then twist the rods in the bore to lock the lifters in place.

Like was already said 5/16 rod works just fine. I got 2 pieces and left em a little long. No need for vice grips, bending, etc.
