Default used engine question

I am new to the ls world and have a question for you guys. I am about to buy a engine for my ls1 swap and found a 99 Pontiac Trans Am WS6 ls1 with t56 harness, ecm and hurt shifter. Has 60k on it came from a salvage car. Owner said the car ran well before it was pulled. Since the engine is out it can no longer have a compression test done. Should i ask the owner if i can perform a leakdown test? How common are engine issues with this mileage. He is asking $3500 for it all it seems fair to me but i don't want to pay more than fair market value. Cheers

You could wire up the starter to a battery and charger.
Remove the plugs and crank away for a comp test.
Or a leakdown test by just turning the crank to the desired spot, then you'll have to keep it from turning somehow if it's not on tdc.

But at that mileage, should not be hurt. However, you might want to perform one or the other as you never know?

I paid $1,500 for a 01 LS1 motor w/out trans. Guy said it had roughly 50K miles. It also came from a salvaged car and sat for some time. I haven't had any issues with it. Its in my SS now and a buddy of mine installed my cam and said it looked like it had more miles than the guy I bought it from claimed.

I will ask if the starter is on it, as hooking up a battery seems like it would be a easy option for a compression test.
