atleast no smaller than a 228 cam. But i would honestly step up to like a TSP torquer 2. Its a 232/234. That would be a good all around size.

You do not have to pull the heads to do a cam swap, but what most consider doing it right is changing the lifters especially if you have some mileage on your motor. That requires pulling the heads. Not only that consider upgrading to a new 2004 or later ls6 valley cover. Check your knock sensors for rust, replace as needed.
