Default Best place to pick up a 5.3

Hello guys. I recently bought a 2000 z28, LS1/6speed car for cheap. Its got a rod knock and I need to replace the motor. I've looked at the local craigslists but haven't found much. I've read numerous posts about people picking up very cheap 5.3 engines(under 500). I would like to get a lower mileage piece if possible. Called some local junk yards and the best I've found is one with 78k for $750. This same yard also had a 6.0 with 90k for $1250.

My thinking is get this car up and running as a driver while I spend time and money gathering parts to put a higher HP combo together down the road. I just sold one of my other cars so I've got $6000 to throw at this z28. I know I will need to rebuild my tranny while i've got everything torn apart so I'm figuring that into my budget as well. Anyone give me any advice on a good place to start for a motor swap?

I would start by checking the classifieds here and post up in your regional forums.

Depending on your location, keep an eye on your local craigslist. I picked one up for $200, with the heads off so I could verify the cyl walls, and another shortblock 5.3 bored 5.7 with ls1 pistons for $300. Local forums are good too, sometimes you can find guys swapping good 5.3's out for 6.0L's and just want to get rid of them. Only benefit to spending the 750 at a yard is if they include a 6mo warantee.

Personally if 6.0L is the end result you are seeking I would go with the 6.0L and throw cam/springs/headers at it when you install.
