How to measure flycutting depth?
How to measure flycutting depth? How does one measure the depth of a piston notch (flycut)? Im not talking about the PTV, I wanna know how to measure the amount I take out of the piston.
One method is to measure to piston to valve clearance, and however much more clearance you want (assuming you're not hitting AKA: zero clearance) you cut. Unless you measure what you have and know how much you want to have, you're just going to cut a certain depth and try to be consistent on it.

The thing is my heads are not done, (still at the shop) and I wanna get everything ready so I can bang the car out in a day. A local shop says they remove .100 on thier reliefs. I bought some tools and want to do the same. Im just wondering how to measure the cut
I'd likely start at .080" deep if I'm shooting for a number without measuring piston to valve.

Feeler gauges would work fine, and can be purchased from any autoparts store for a few bucks.

Thats what I was thinking but wanted confirmation. Its amazing that I couldnt find a thread where some one says "Use a feeler gauge to measure the cut in the piston". All of the ones I could find involved using PTV to measure depth.
