Default Cheater cam w/ everything else stock

Since i have to change my oil pump and harmonic balancer i thought that i would look into installing a new timing chain and cam while im in there. I don't really like the sound of a lopey cam so i was interested in a TR cheatr cam. Due to money and time constraints i'll be keeping my stock manifolds, heads and intake.

Car is a 90k 99 A4 with stock gears, gmmg catback, and a lid. Its my DD that will never see the track, just looking for a few more hp.

I've done a lot of searches but am still unsure of what all i should replace. Im assuming new springs, retainers, pushrods and a tune are required. Also I plan on installing some 3:73's later this year.

BTW i've done hours of researching threads and stickies but have to admit i still feel a little over my head. I have no concerns about installing everything (i work on jets for a living) but digesting all the different info is still a bit confusing.

Thanks for any help and if anyone has a video of a setup similar to this that would be great!

Port the TB, and get a set of PAC 1518 valve springs, and a LS6 intake should be in your future.

Thanks for the clips!

On TR's site they list 3 cheatr cams. One's for an LS2 but what is the difference between the V.3 and the first one listed?

It has slightly less lobe lift, and the intake duration is 214, not 219 like the V.3.
Another Stealth option is the, TR "Old Man Truck Cam" - 214/220 .600/.523 115 LSA 2 .

198/204, .500 lift

LS6:
204/218, .550 lift

Yes, I think that's abundantly obvious, but he said he was on a budget (wants to keep stock manifolds, heads, intake) so why not consider a stock cam?

LS6 cams on average go for $150 dollars.. you can get a cheater cam that will make more power than an LS6 yet be just as stealthy for ~$200 more. Why not wait a little bit longer to get a better product?

if you wanted to spend a lil more you could do a cam from EPS, one of their cam will be easier on your valve springs and make more power

If it was my money, I would, but OP will have to answer that question.

yeah your off to the right track, the ls6 cam is also an option but will only pick up arout 20 horsepower at peak and not throughout the powerband. People run them on a stock tune with the rev limiter and shift points adjusted with nothing more the ls6 valvesprings. That would be a valid option also if you were trying to save more coin.

You might want to also consider a higher Stall TC, nothing outrageous.

i vote ls6 cam.

ls6 cam/springs would be cheaper than just the cheatr cam itself. not to mention, the ls6 setup was made to work under warranty and last 100k+ miles. the cheatr cam has very aggressive lobes that require a good aftermarket spring (which requires checking and changing annually should you dd this vehicle). just food for thought.

yes the ls6 cam is smaller. will it net the same hp as a cheatr? i don't know, but i have seen a few ls6 cams put down over 370whp with headers and supporting bolt-ons. i think a properly done ls6 cam swap would net you plenty of power and provide years of problem/maintenance free use.

Ok few q's for you;

What specs on that cheatr?
What springs and/or heads?
What manifolds/headers?
What exhuast setup?
A4 or M6?
Tuned?
And anything else you've swapped in regards to the cam.

Sorry for all the questions but i REALLY appreciate your vid and any info you can pass along!

Car sounds great can't wait to see what kind of #'s you put down!

To everyone else thanks a lot for all the info and opinions, i think i'm about there. Reaserching some EPS baby cams also now. Thanks for the heads up!

FYI, EPS has several small cam that would make a good stealth cam.

This one is almost the same as the original TR cheaTR cam.

This one is very similar to the TR old man truck cam.

Tell me more. Is there any reason it would be less durable than the stock cam if the LS6 springs were included at the time of install? I just picked up a Z28 with an LS6 cam and 92k. I'm not sure when the cam was installed, but it could have anywhere from 15-50k on it. What should I be aware of in terms of future maintenance on the cam/springs? Anything? It is an OEM part, and the specs are quite mild, but I'm curious.
