I've read good things about Mobil-1 0W-40 on BITOG and found my LS1 likes it as well. It has more zinc and phosphorous than regular Mobil-1, slightly thicker at operating temp than 5W-30. Consumption dropped to less than 1 quart per 3K miles, valvetrain was quieter at idle.

Only downside is no 5qt jug of it at Wal-Mart, have to buy it in 1qt bottles. Only costs a few dollars more for 5 quarts and worth it IMHO.

That's a good observation, how exactly did Amsoil compare favorably?

I'm in South Charlotte close to the buster boyd bridge an Carrowinds.
and actually today I replaced my trans mount and noticed some oil coming down the motor on the driver side. I believe it is coming from the valve cover gasket, so that can amount for some of the oil loss. lol

Car ran and idled smoother, seemed to pull better, Oil pressure was consistent, Oil didn't seem to dissipate as much and was cleaner upon changing, car ran cooler, better mpg - strictly my opinion and observation ( may vary )

And no grader, you will see no negative effects upon switching to a 10-30 weight oil.

I used to burn oil pretty badly as well with conventional 5w-30. I switched to 10w-30 and started using Lucas Oil Stabilizer with every oil change and I barely burn any oil anymore.. My car's got 95,000 miles on it

my last question, is it better to run the synthetic, or the conventional in our cars?

First, my last question. Is it more educational to read information, or to write questions?

it just seems to be opinionated. I know on this fourum, synthectic seems to be the ticket if you start out with a decent engine without all the buildup. I guess what i am asking is, is there a differce in oil consumption in the synthetic to the conventional as thats what i am trying to correct. If i cant help in changing the oils, i will go to the oil catch can.

Synthetic works great in them if it's a brand new engine. If the previous owner used synthetic then definitely still use it. If the previous owner didn't then just stick with conventional because the synthetic will burn alot worse than your conventional does. I recommend switching to conventional 10w-30 and try using Lucas Oil Stabilizer with every oil change. My car has around the same miles as yours and thats what worked best for me!

Dunno but I used to use GC 0-30 and noticed that my valvetrain was quieter when I switched to TropArtic conventional 5-30. I'm running Rotella 10-30 right now for a summer oil and I'm a little disappointed with it. Oil pressure is way up when it's cold (undesirable), and up somewhat in cool air at normal operating temps. But it starts to fall off when its really hot outside about like the TropArtic. In spite of the noisy valvetrain, GC gave more consistent performance year-round; that's what a good synthetic does.

GC 0w-30 here. Valvetrain is noisy. Will try M1 10w-30 next change. Being in south Florida I don't get real extreme temp changes either like some of you northern guys.

You might like Mobil-1 High Mileage for the extra zinc and phosphorous anti-wear additives vs. regular Mobil-1. The new API "SM" spec has these reduced even lower than previous spec and regular Mobil-1 is SM rated. High Mileage isn't, so it has the extra good stuff.

It comes in the same handy 5 quart jug at Wal-Mart, costs about the same, but both my LS1 and my truck are quiet.

Everyone seems to swear that newbies should only be allowed to post in the newbie forum.

I believe they're occasionally right.

and with useless Smart *** answers like that you should do everyone a favor and just quit posting... I agree completely with his comment, I put it in Porsche's everyday and dont see any issues due to lack of lubrication, including track cars. I dont think i have seen anyone ask for a different brand of oil.
