I've read good things about Mobil-1 0W-40 on BITOG and found my LS1 likes it as well. It has more zinc and phosphorous than regular Mobil-1, slightly thicker at operating temp than 5W-30. Consumption dropped to less than 1 quart per 3K miles, valvetrain was quieter at idle.
Only downside is no 5qt jug of it at Wal-Mart, have to buy it in 1qt bottles. Only costs a few dollars more for 5 quarts and worth it IMHO.

and actually today I replaced my trans mount and noticed some oil coming down the motor on the driver side. I believe it is coming from the valve cover gasket, so that can amount for some of the oil loss. lol

i run mobil 1 in all of my vehicles. For some reason when i use mobil in my trans am in uses a bit, and when i used royal purple(buddy recomendation) it seemed to help alot. Same weight but differect brands

Prolly a stupid questin but do different brands and different weights of oil get rid of valvetrain noise? Just wondering cuz I ran royal purple awhile back and valve noise was more aparent so I switched back to mobil 1

And no grader, you will see no negative effects upon switching to a 10-30 weight oil.

I used to burn oil pretty badly as well with conventional 5w-30. I switched to 10w-30 and started using Lucas Oil Stabilizer with every oil change and I barely burn any oil anymore.. My car's got 95,000 miles on it

it just seems to be opinionated. I know on this fourum, synthectic seems to be the ticket if you start out with a decent engine without all the buildup. I guess what i am asking is, is there a differce in oil consumption in the synthetic to the conventional as thats what i am trying to correct. If i cant help in changing the oils, i will go to the oil catch can.

Synthetic works great in them if it's a brand new engine. If the previous owner used synthetic then definitely still use it. If the previous owner didn't then just stick with conventional because the synthetic will burn alot worse than your conventional does. I recommend switching to conventional 10w-30 and try using Lucas Oil Stabilizer with every oil change. My car has around the same miles as yours and thats what worked best for me!

Dunno but I used to use GC 0-30 and noticed that my valvetrain was quieter when I switched to TropArtic conventional 5-30. I'm running Rotella 10-30 right now for a summer oil and I'm a little disappointed with it. Oil pressure is way up when it's cold (undesirable), and up somewhat in cool air at normal operating temps. But it starts to fall off when its really hot outside about like the TropArtic. In spite of the noisy valvetrain, GC gave more consistent performance year-round; that's what a good synthetic does.

It comes in the same handy 5 quart jug at Wal-Mart, costs about the same, but both my LS1 and my truck are quiet.

I believe they're occasionally right.
