Default Carbon buildup......

recently picked up a LQ9....pulled the intake and the intake ports have a decent amount of carbon covering the walls. should I get them hot tanked or is there a cheaper DIY route to go? don't mind removing heads, what would I use chemical/abrasive....?

Is it carbon, or burnt oil that got sucked up through the pcv valve? If you want to do it yourself, get a little brass brush or even an old tooth brush and a couple cans of Brakekleen and have at it....or if you feel brave and have a compressor you could get a port/ polish kit and clean up the runners and bowls.

After everything is done do your self a favor and get a good valve job done on them
