Fairly new to the Ls, doing a compression check on a LQ9 motor is on engine stand, how should I hook up the battery to the starter, gonna use a remote starter button also.

 

Using battery cables hook the positive cable to the large lug/nut on the starter and the negative cable to a bolt on the block , then You're remote start button to the positive at the battery and the small lug/nut on the starter . Or to engage the starter without the starter button , just using a screw driver connect the 2 lugs/nuts on the starter making sure to not touch the screw driver to ground at the same time .

 

Right, the starter grounds through the engine. So anywhere on the engine would be fine for the ground, preferably as close to the actual starter as you can get. The main + for the starter's power is the big stud on the solenoid. The small stud is the turn on for the solenoid, it needs a + to activate. So if both the big and little stud have 12v+ and the engine is grounded, the starter will turn over indefinitely as long as you hold that connection. The button would go inline with the small stud I'm sure, but I have never actually used one.
