Default Cam install tool dimensions?

I did a search a came up empty. Does anyone know. It needs to work on the truck in my sig. I have the means to build one for pretty cheap, and I thought that would be better than buying one for $100+ bucks.

Thanks, Jay

I used 1/4 alum rod and just cut down until I could fit into the engine bay, Alum is nice cause it will bend and won't score the block.

So no definate answer then? I hate to drop the cash for one when I know that it can be made easily. But I've never done a cam swap before and I don't want to drop a lifter!

Magnet pens... Costs a little more than the aluminum rod. They worked great for me.

Hey bro,

If you don't want to spend the big $ on the TR tool then use pen magnets. You can purchase 16 of them for approximately $30.00 from Autozone. Remember to check each magnet at its attachment point for bond strength. Also, be sure to either superglue the attachment point or epoxy it so that you have added security that the magnet won't detach onto a lifter.

Good luck,

Nate

Pen magnets were $1.79 ea. at WalMart. Pay attention to the warning about lost magnets. After my cam install, I took 10 of the pen magnets to the machine shop where I work, and every one of them has lost it's magnet! FWIW, I used plastic Clothes Pins (2-piece w/spring) to secure the pen magnets to the head.
Good luck,
John

The JPR tool is overpriced, but if you drop a lifter the value of the tool suddenly goes way up. Like I tell the guys that fish on my boat "Once the boat leaves the launch the cost of lures skyrockets". I tried the magnet method before buying the tool because I was trying to save money, but could only get the cam out about 1/3 of the way before it repeatedly hit a snag. Once I installed the JPR tool the cam jumped out of the block by itself.

It sounds like I'm asking for trouble by not buying the tool.
